Side discussion thread for top New Jersey engineering students looking for advice getting merit aid

We actually live in AZ and have done just that  - applied to UofA, ASU, UTD, UCF, UF among a few others. Accepted into all (plus honors) with offers and waiting on UF. We’ll most likely follow the full NM scholarships as it’s hard to pass up a free undergrad degree. We want to retire (hopefully sooner than later!) and we don’t want our son to start out with debt.

Rutgers wasn’t really on our radar, but we were in NYC and my son wanted to see some east coast schools, so we visited a few. He liked it, but it’s not on the top of his list.

@BMC9670 @RRRGSP @NJEngineerDad Also I had a stat well below 36 ACT/1570 SAT and got a full ride and honors college from engineering last year which is the hardest school to get it from aside from pharmacy and nursing (I had 34 ACT and 1530 SAT). The lowest score I know for full ride was my score but I think after the 1530 they just look at extracurriculars. It also helps that I was a nmf. On that note, many people with 36 ACT and 1600 SAT score didn’t get it, because of crummy extracurriculars. With the advent of the honors college, they prefer well rounded students as opposed to only smart students

@Tictacmissus That is interesting that extracurriculars might be taken into account. Were the 36 ACT / 1600 SAT people you know that did not get the presidential scholarship also NMF? Congratulations and Happy New Year!

@NJEngineerDad Yes, I know two or three people with NMF with 36 ACT that did not get presidential even from SAS or SEBS, I think they only got around $10k or so. The only explanation I can think of is that after a certain point they care about extracurriculars only.I know for sure that the honors college values volunteering, and I had a lot of volunteering. I think the honors program (I.e. honors academy) schools place more emphasis on academics while honors college places more emphasis on extracurriculars.
Also, keep in mind the presidential goes out to the top 1% of applicants in each school, so SAT alone won’t be enough to pick someone for the scholarship as SAT scores are pretty much all the same when it is the top 1%

Also wanted to add that the expense of the engineering school is more than the other schools at Rutgers as soe has a lot of new buildings, so the expense is actually $30k or so first year, and the fee is around the same for everyone living on campus as you are required to pick at least the 210 plan. SAS is about $1-2k cheaper. The term bill is paid twice, so you pay $15k at a time without any scholarships or loans

SOE readily gives scholarships to make the cost the same as other schools. 1/4 of the presidential scholars a couple years ago were in SOE, and this year even if you weren’t in the hc, honors academy kids basically all got $8k or so
