Silverturtle's Guide to SAT and Admissions Success

darn thanks. i hate idiomatic error, for they are the one thing that i still get wrong on the writing.

Hey, silverturtle, is it okay if my justification for why the correct answer is correct is different from collegeboard’s explanation, does that make my justification false?

^ Can you give an example?

Silverturtle, would you use “little to no” or “little or no”? This was on the January SAT and there’s been debate about this.

Hi Silverturtle! Would you mind PM-ing me as to what colleges you had applied to (and have been admitted to) as of now? Thanks!

“little or no” is decidedly correct. As far as I know, “little to no” is idiomatic and perhaps colloquial; I don’t know whether the College Board would consider it incorrect.

This post, except that I did not apply to Michigan, is correct: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/11678452-post71.html

Hey silverturtle,

When would be the best time to start studying for SATS? I’m a sophomore, but I’m not the greatest test taker. I wan’t to start over the summer so I’ll have loads of time to prep. Do you think that’s a good idea? Also, is taking a bunch of practice test a good way to familiarize yourself with the SATs format?

^ Starting the summer after your sophomore year is a fine plan. Take your first real administration whenever you feel ready, as long as you take it at least once during junior year. Preparing with real practice tests is the best way to familiarize yourself with the test.

Hello Silverturtle,

I have a couple of SAT questions I would like some help on if possible:

First of all, I would like to introduce myself as a new member on this forum. I feel like I’ve been missing out all this time!

Anyways, I recently read your forum and I found it much more helpful than my private tutor. However, I’m having a lot of trouble increasing my Critical Reading/Writing section. Do you have any personal tips? I feel like I’m having the most trouble in the Inference questions. Could I possibly enlist help from you? I’ve heard a lot of people personally approached you and improved their scores by a couple hundred points! I am a very good student at school, but I’m having a lot of trouble with the dreadful SAT. I have tried taking practice tests and reviewed my answers but I don’t feel like it helps a lot for me. Is there some technique to approach each different questions? (Inference, Based on passage, lines ____, etc)?

Here is a bit of information if needed:
I’m a Sophomore at High School
The highest score I’ve reason might have been 18xx/low 19xx.

Is there any instant way I can contact you for “tutoring” & tips besides P.M.?

I truly appreciate your time for reading this,

okay this post is AMAZING. Found it a little too late, but oh well

can somebody help me out in this case? lets suppose I get rejected RD from dartmouth with really good stats (as an international). If I take a gap year, add something to my appl and apply again, will the “this applicant applied before” catch hurt my chances ? or should I indicate that I have never applied before? Thank you !!

This is awesome. I am going to try to memorize and execute all your tips to the best of my ability. I agree with the dozens of others who say this should be published!

P.S. I made this account just now only because this guide is so awesome and deserves to be praised.

hey silverturtle,

i saw your mention of “historical data” in terms of admissions by high school.
my private hs hasnt sent a grad to a top school since, i believe, roughly ten years ago when one went to columbia (few, if any, have applied since).
i have a fairly high uw gpa and scores in range of all the schools i applied to (not to mention ecs and leadership roles up the wazoo)- would this still stand for me?

i got a 5 on apush (the only one i could possibly take in 11th grade) to sort of validate my grade.
i also take college classes at a CUNY in which i earned a 4.0 cumulative gpa.

and if its worth anything, the student who was admitted was also the first of her kind with similar scores.

thanks

p.s. really nice work :)

Amazing guide!

However, National Merit finalists are only allowed to pick one first-choice school. Your section on National Merit indicated that they could pick two.

Thank you!
God bless you silver turtle

Just to provide you with some pride, I want to tell you that your SAT guide helped me improve immensely. As a junior, I took the SAT in March and received 660/800/710. Then, after prepping with your guide, I improved to 770/800/790 in October. Thank you so much!

Hi. Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there a PDF version of your guide?

Silverturtle I need your opinion - or others, anyone is welcome to give me suggestions: If I have an old PSAT (by CB) and the blue book, I shouldn’t need to buy other PSAT study material?

I think those are fine since preparing for the SAT will help you in preparing for the PSAT since the PSAT is just a shorter version of the SAT.

Silverturtle, this is great article. Thank you for sharing this. Wonderful guide for my son to start preparing the SAT at 9th grade.

to rd2012

I believe the “do” should be taken out and it should just be read “…than conventionally grown, pesticide treated plants”
