When did you hear? I sent an email last week, but I have not received any reply.
I was accepted as well! My jaws almost dropped reading an earlier poster’s stats (“research at Harvard since age 10”) and I couldn’t help but think how is that even possible? It felt like a ■■■■■. Especially because although I have my own accomplishments, I feel like mine stack up a little short in comparison. As such, I think the committee isn’t necessarily orientated SOLELY or even MOSTLY around stats and awards.Stats are a good measure of work ethic, drive, and scientific prowess, but in my opinion they perhaps constitute only 50%. Why else would so little room be allotted for questions pertaining to capability/experience? 25% is perhaps dependent upon your scientific spirit. Do you have an immense visionary ability coupled with a hopeful and momentous mindset and drive? The other 25% I think is being able to say WHAT you did, not necessarily the name of your work. Perhaps it is more meaningful to say you worked with biomarkers, cell isolation and culturing, and DNA extraction for a summer, or that you have sought every possible means to push forward your scientific goals. For example, I went to wits end to pursue an engineering project I developed entirely with my own research and thought (no mentor). I went to over 15 organizations / departments, and even looked at utilizing a machine I needed at my school librarian’s husband’s company.
Scientific capability and knowledge is the foundation. Tenacity and initiative is the next thing. A visionary (but scientifically founded) mind is essential above all.
