SIMR (Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program) 2016 THREAD

Nice

Only 1100 people applied this year, considerably fewer than previous years. Acceptance should have been roughly 5.5%

I’m from the Bay Area who else is from the bay

How do u know 1100 people applied

Got the call from SIMR as well!! The whole thing just feels so unreal. Hope to see you there futuredoc99!

Ya! See you there are u a junior

@sat7230

didn’t get an email, and they won’t respond to emails later. what do I do?

@futuredoc99 yep! junior in bay area haha

Got rejected. I expected it but it still stings, you know? Now I’ll probably do the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion, if I get into that. Question for you guys, which plan should I take this summer?

  1. Girls Who Code + summer Chemistry classes at night so I can take AP Bio next year. I’ve been taking AP physics classes for the past 2 years and I feel that dropping to regular ol’ chemistry just looks bad.
  2. Just Girls Who Code, because I’m taking AP Calc BC and 3 more APs next year, and putting AP Bio on top of that will be nuts

Is it true if u get into SIMR you have a high chance to get into Stanford. How much does participating in SIMR help college admissions

@futuredoc99 helps, but its not like guarantee or like huge boost, my school had 4 attendees, and only one of them got into stanford

@futuredoc99 I think it certainly does help. But, essentially, it’s just like participating at Harvard for research. Really prestigious! You’re very lucky to have gotten in! I just want to see anyone not from the Bay Area who got in.

Ok thanks guys @rtang28 did the attendees at your school go to prestigious colleges?

@futuredoc99 idk yet not that i know of

was anyone else waitlisted? How likely is it that some on the waitlist will be admitted (I’m assuming not very  )

Actually how prestigious is this internship… I got in but I am not sure if I could do it. Is this internship a make or break activity for a UC college acceptance…

@futuredoc99 I hate to castigate you, but you shouldn’t be happy you got in just because of prestige. It’s about getting an opportunity to research some really cool stuff at the best place possible to research.

@yayarea459w UC college acceptance is not as selective to require anything like SIMR, nor is the program as selective as years past, as it’s much much more of a local opportunity than a national one.

Hi @joeweller I am very grateful that I was selected not only for the prestige but because I have an overwhelming strong passion for medicine and scientific research. I have been planning to conduct research in a specific field for some time now, and I extremely excited that I can research a topic that I care so much about at Stanford. So please understand and don’t castigate me

wooooo I got in somehow! Do any of you know how we can view which institute we got into? Hoping for bioinformatics
Also does anyone know if someone has made a Facebook group for SIMR 2016? I know they’ve created some in previous years to get to know each other before they met in person in the summer!
