single serving coffee machine

For a single cup I use a Melitta cone with a paper filter that fits nicely over a mug. Just boil water and pour. Easy to use and clean up, and very inexpensive: [Melitta cone](File:Kaffeefilter.jpg - Wikipedia)

So Delicate, are you saying there is a reuseable cup you can buy for $14 that can be used with regular grounds??? And that reuseable cup can last a few months?

Yes, that is correct. The sell the refillable at BBB, so I get new ones with a coupon when I need it. The 12 oz Starbuck’s at WalMart is usually just under $6. And I end up not wasting even one ground!

Part of the reason I like the refillable is no K-cup waste, no paper filter, and I can use a really strong coffee and make a small cup which drives the hot hot water through the grounds and gives me a very intense cup of coffee. It is not bittter like espresso (I drink it black), but two or three short intense cups like that and I am ready for the day!

p.s. I LOVE coffee.

We just boil water on the stove in a pan… Melitta filters if people are visiting and want some coffee. I’m not a fan of more machines in the kitchen!

i love my keurig!

i am not a big fan of the refillable filter, but you can buy lids for k-cups and reuse them. can’t remember what they are called, but they are slick! you rinse out a k-cup, fill with your own grounds, snap on a lid and use them for a custom brew. then remove the lid and toss and/or rinse and reuse the cup.

i normally use heifer hope coffee, daybreak, and donut shop coffees, but there are some local blends that i like and those refillable cups are great for once in a while!

I use this almost every morning, and when guests want decaf. Fast and easy and the coffee is great. (I use Ducken Doughnuts). “One cup’ers” seem to do the job better and you can use any mug. Cleans up is fast and easy with the reusable filter.

A friend gave me her keurig when she moved. I use it but find that the amount of water it holds only fills my favorite coffee mug about 2/3 full. I frequently do one of 2 things instead. I use the instant Starbucks (Vias) which is remarkably good and getting easier to find in supermarkets and drugstores and thus cheaper (though costco just stopped carrying them, to my dismay). The other thing I do is thanks to my DH, who travels constantly. He doesnt drink coffee. So, he takes the daily stash of starbucks (or whatever brand they have) packets that sit in the hotel rooms with the coffeemaker and throws them inhis suitcase. Every time he comes hime I have about a weeks worth of individual or 2 cup servings of coffee. I just throw the filter things in the top of my coffeepot, add the water, and bingo-- yummy coffee and very little cleanup. Oh-- and free :)

Agree with a previous poster that the cheapest and the most environmentally method would be to use a French press (you can make exactly as much as you want) and compost the grounds.
Even if you don’t compost, you wouldn’t be using all the excess wasteful packaging that any single-serving product entails.
You’d save a lot of money, plus French press coffee is VERY good.

You’d also save counter space. (stove top espresso maker also a good choice.)

Ditto on french presses. They are great and the coffee is quite good. I find it a little messy and you have to do 2 steps (heat water and then make the coffee in the press) buut agreed, teh coffee is good. I put the grinds down the garbage disposal as I’ve been told that ti keeps it smelling clean.

Forgot I have a Melitta filter and also a french press somewhere in the back of my cupboard. Still think I might want the novelty of the small Keurig.

Does anybody have the Keurig Elite Brewer, (model B40)? I am doing some christmas shopping and am reading mixed reviews about it. I am wondering if it does a good job, and also hoping to get an idea of how big it is. I’ve never seen any of the keurig machines in person.

Yes…and we LOVE IT! Big water reservoir so less time refilling. Has an auto timer so it’s on and ready when we wake up. Best of all coffee is delish. There are so many varieties of K-cups out there…we love the extra bold Caribou…and just tried the seasonal pumpkin spice which is heavenly. Highly recommend!!

I love my Keurig! I hate the burnt taste of coffee that sits in the carafe. We got the one at
Costco that came with an assortment of K-cups. There’s a seasonal Island Coconut Flavor that was out last spring that we loved. I’m hoping it comes back next year.

Here’s another choice. H is the only coffee drinker here. We have a 4 cup coffee brewer. This way he can choose many different brands/types of coffee. Black and Decker’s works.

Seasonal warning- one year H got a gift of several different coffee beans, we have a grinder. One thing he didn’t realize was that the small plastic bag of chocolate covered coffee beans was meant to be eaten, not ground…

H and I rarely drink coffee, but we always keep some in the fridge. If I want a cup, I take a regular round coffee filter, put in a little coffee, twist up the edges and dip it up and down in a mug of hot water. I wonder why they don’t make coffee bags like tea bags? I guess they’d have to be sealed individually or they’d lose flavor?–but that could be done.

I don’t need one, but I would like one-yeah, me too, another appliance!
But sometimes on weekends I would like just one cup & not use the big coffeemaker.

I LOVE my Melitta one cup, It uses pods. They are cheaper than the K-cups, and you can use Melitta pods, or ANY pod brand. I bought a pod maker on sale and when my Jamaica Blue Mountain (bought on a medical mission trip for cheap) ran out I changed to Kona. I occasionally buy some Godiva pods at Christmas with flavored coffee. The already made pods are way less expensive than cups and you can get a variety of coffees.

Would my husband be able to use one of these makers to shoot just hot water through for his hot/iced tea???

I need to replace our HotShot and also need a small coffee maker and I’m wondering if one of these will meet both needs.

I’m guessing a bit messy???
