Skidmore vs Bates vs Kenyon

Based on available information, the per capita murder rate in Lewiston is exactly double that of New York City.

In any case, since it seems that perhaps three people read the Sun Journal article that was postedon Lewiston, it doesn’t appear that many here have inquired deeply into the topic of serious crime in Lewiston.

It seems that people want to disagree with this?!

Based on WHAT available information??

Only the FBI releases murder rates and apparently they don’t break it out by city. Please cite your source.

It seems frankly staggering to me that you assert the murder rate is higher than NYC. Because, according to Google, there were exactly ZERO murders in Lewiston in 2024, the most recent year statistics are available.

Now, there was a mass shooting event in 2023, which was horrific, and killed 16 people. But sadly mass shootings occur in all sorts of locations in all sorts of safe areas, so I don’t think we can single out Lewiston as being causative of , or particularly prone to, mass shootings.

This thread is getting ridiculous. I should note I have no dog in this fight. None of my kids went there. But I really don’t like it when people who really don’t know what they are talking about insist on describing a school as if they did know!

What is the source of your information?

There was exactly one murder in Lewiston in all of 2024.

Using per capital statistics when comparing cities like NYC and Lewiston is problematic. NYC has a daily influx of commuters coming into the city from the surrounding communities in 3 different states. In addition, it has non-commuters coming into the city for a whole host of other reasons - business, conventions, hospitals, sports & entertainment, museums, schools & colleges, airports, driving through to somewhere else, etc. Finally, NYC is the #1 tourist destination in the USA, so there are a whole lot of other non-residents in the city. Lewiston has little to none of this daily influx of outsiders who expand the real population of the city.

The Maine government site lists one murder in Lewiston in 2024 2024 Annual Homicides | Maine State Police

Looks like there was another this summer when school wasn’t in session.

IMO it’s not helpful to be comparing Lewiston to NYC in terms of rates. This is when the number of actual incidents do matter.

I would have had zero safety concerns if my D wanted to go to school at Bates.

What about the double murder this year in 2025 in Saratoga Springs? What about the mass murderer outside of Gambier?

This thread has jumped the shark…

This is when I feel bad for the poor kid who came here for some advice and they get dragged into the spiral of adult squabbling.

It was horrific. It did not kill 60 people. There were 18 fatalities, not including the shooter. Still horrific, but … not 60 (I remember the initial reports speculated something around that number, which might be what you’re remembering, but that was pretty far off.) It as enough, however, to throw the typical murder stats for Maine (and Lewiston) way off. Aside from that one terrible incident, there were two murders in Lewiston for all of 2023, and one for all of 2024, according to this source: 2024 Annual Homicides | Maine State Police

The main issue for me is that this is an international student who will most likely need to return home after graduation.

so which one will be most recognised/ carry most weight back home?

Which will give him the set of experiences and growth that most prepares him for the future.

Please get back to the OP’s question and move on from the discussion of homicides. At this point it may be providing a misleading message. At the least, it should be in a new thread. Thank you for your understanding.
