Skipping Calculus AB [HS math progression: IM1 -> IM2H -> IM3H -> AB -> BC]

This will require financial aid at some private universities that have list prices over $90k per year.

No - financial limits, geographical limits, etc.

You don’t need to tell us but if your family’s income really is 180k you could qualify for FA at some colleges -and your family can probably afford 40-50k for college, not 70k.
Run the NPC on Stanford, Santa Clara, Lewis&Clark, UPuget Sound, Case Western Reserve, and Lafayette, plus a UC, the CSU nearest you and a private college near you.
(I selected the private colleges above because they’re good for STEM and calculate net costs differently).

Well, I live about half an hour away from harvey mudd, so that is a pretty good option. And when UC is comparing me to my peers in the same high school do they look at which major they are applying to, so few example if I want to major in cs and their are other people wanting to major in cs, they will choose the “best” cs major in terms of grades, extracurriculars, etc.

They will look at students in your math cohort (and your GC must make sure that cohort is clear/what your math sequence is) applying for CS and in that cohort may choose 12, 3, 1 or zero.

I know you’re keenly aware that CS is currently the most competitive major (next would be Biological Sciences, Engineering, and Economics/Business/PoliticalScience.)
So, one thing you can do to keep your options open is to check out majors such as Informatics, Data Science, CS+X, Computing

Other things you can do that would emhance your profile more than skipping a key class, is developing your programming or coding skills, doing something with your CS abilities so you help people, participating in Hackathons or such activities

What do you mean by 12 3 1 and 0 , sorry for asking so much questions.

Universities are free to choose 12, 3, or zero applicant.

70k for college on a 180k income? Is there college savings or will there be? I’d ask your parents for an actual number.

Nevermind max is 50k per year. However we qualify to aid at about all of the top tier privates, we can afford any uc.

Hello I know it’s been a long time but I recently found out that I can simply take calc 1 and calc 2 during senior year via dual enrollment instead of calc bc so that’s an option maybe.

If you feel ready to handle it, it’s an ideal option for you! You would cover AB and C in 2 semesters so you have to be ready for the intensity, but you’d reach your goal with none of the downsides of skipping AB (and if it were too intense you could drop it at the end of Fall semester and still have Calc completed.)

Yes, but the only problem is that it is online, I am scared I won’t properly learn in online classes.

why do you need to rush?

Hello, it is just an option that is available and that I can consider.

You’re already on a plan to end up in Calc AB. That’s good enough for every school in the country.

Why risk, on a subject that builds, that you muff - and then what?

Stay the normal path.

Okay, technically it is the normal path, instead of taking calculus ab which is year-round I would take calculus 1 first semester and calculus 2 second semester.

And you’ll potentially fall behind. The grade won’t matter for college as decisions will be in.

You have a lot more risk than reward.

Calc AB will get you into every school so why do you need to push ahead ?

This is all about, going to early thread, you feel bad you are not on a BC path. Neither are most kids in America.

Math builds. Put your ego in check and take the slow road.

You’ll be better off later
.in my belief.

Thank you, and also by the way are you a parent or like employee hear as your always online and reply really fast, no offense just asking.

Parent. And yea I have a job. I multi task.

I think kids today put way too much pressure and stress on themselves.

What is your goal ? And how will ‘speeding up’ help you achieve the goal ?

I want to major in cs in university however, I am taking a cs dual enrollment class right now and I don’t really enjoy it, I have an A+ currently but it is boring, and I can’t picture myself doing that as a job. I might major in biology, but I am not so sure yet.

Either way why do you need calc bc now?
