Aww. It got here in today’s mail, carrier left a note explaining it went to Same-Number Almost-My-Street-Name and apologizing for the mix-up.
I haven’t noticed mail (letters or packages) slowing down but definitely less junk mail and catalogs which I‘m fine with …less wasted paper. I’ve also moved most of my bills to autopay over the last 5 years or so.
per WSJ today:
DeJoy was brought in as a logistics expert. He looked at an operation that was losing billions per year and the fastest way to balance the budget was to cut overtime, cut out convenience pick ups from the blue boxes scattered around towns, to tighten up the rules. He did that, and now people are saying the postal system should be a public service, especially to the rural areas that aren’t served by private delivery like amazon or UPS.
It’s fine if congress wants to fund the post office and keep the price of stamps down, provide employment for many people (including a lot of retired military), make sure the census and vote by mail ballots get back in time. Fine (and I actually think it’s a good thing). But that’s never been done before, it’s never been funded before. Congress and the president are not ‘defunding’ the postal service as its never been funded before.
I seriously doubt fewer boxes is why mail arrives slower. Fewer sorting machines and not being allowed any overtime seems far more likely.
ETA there are fewer routes too. We used to get mail picked up twice per day at our PO. There’s been a sign lately saying as of today (9/1) there will only be one pick up.
A few years ago they went from 3 pick ups to 2 and that slowed local things down, but not mailings to far away places. We’ve yet to see if things will be even slower to far away places now.
No mail yesterday and no sign of mail trucks at all in our area. Now that is strange for my area.
I had the dreaded “UPS package transferred to our local post office on 8/21 for delivery”, but no signs of the package yet. I live 1/2 mile from the post office.
Porch Pirate?
No, no porch pirate. It is still showing “it’s on the way.”
Hmm, Dogsled? With untrained dogs who focus more on squirrels?
Our mail delivery has not slowed down, fortunately. The USPS trucks also seem busy on weekends delivering for Amazon. Our service is generally good. A couple of mishaps the last two Christmas seasons, but both were eventually corrected.
The only thing in our mail yesterday was a “personal and confidential” card to H from a well known political figure. If it weren’t for the outside stuff showing it’s spam, I’d have assumed it was a greeting card. No biggie. We get trash all the time and it’s election season.
My question is how did this first class card get sent with just two 5 cent stamps put on it (grapes if anyone is curious - don’t see 5 centers too often anymore). Is it something special politicians get (cheaper postage)?
If so, that ought to be one of the first PO reforms made. There’s so much political mailing every two years… if they had to pay full freight, it would certainly help with the funds or perhaps lessening the load.
Getting just one thing on a Tuesday here is normal now - ever since they decreased the number of routes coming in, so before the latest cuts. We call getting no or little mail on Tuesday “typical Tuesday” in our household.
It’s not first class mail, it is bulk mail.
How is it bulk mail when it looks just like a greeting card aside from the return address (showing it’s a political source) and the “Personal and Confidential” statement on it?
Bulk mail that I’m used to is more akin to flyers. Politicians use oodles of it, but so do stores and other sales folks.
Is it just due to the number they mail out at once?
.
Yep.
Still waiting for a letter/card that was mailed late April…
And presort by zip code.
Is priority mail normally delivered on Sundays? As a collector I order stamps from USPS in various formats, etc. I placed an order that was over a week late, based on normal shipping times. Last Sunday the order was placed in our mailbox. It wasn’t left over from Saturday–I watched the mail carrier do it.
Regular priority mail is not delivered on Sundays. There are some types of overnight mail that is ($$$$). However, I’ve read and seen news clips that some post offices are working every day to clear the backlog.
