But was the damage to homes from flooding or from mud slides? (I really don’t know). When I lived in Florida, I lived between the St. Johns river (less than 1/2 mile) and the ocean (maybe 10 miles). The river often flooded but only to the first row of houses closest to it. I don’t think it was in a flood zone, but I do think Jacksonville itself was as the St. Johns runs right through it.
A city like Tampa does get flooding from the bay backed up on the streets, but still much more damage from the winds and rain than flooding.
Because of all the climate craziness and problems, my insurance agent recommends getting all the insurance you can for all the risks you can (of course she has a vested interest), but it makes sense to us. Yes, it costs more but it allows us to sleep well at night because replacing our home will be an expensive undertaking and having insurance SHOULD help that some.
Both flooding and landslides in the Asheville area. The rivers rose incredibly fast and incredibly high in the valleys so that was river flooding that inundated neighborhoods and swept houses and businesses away, and up on the mountain sides there were landslides where the earth gave away and ripped up trees and whole mountain sides slid down.
In Chapel Hill and Wilmington (and many other places in NC over the years in the Piedmont and coastal plain) it’s flooding with no landslides because those regions aren’t mountainous.
Good to know. I think flooding has been the bigger issue over the past 20 years or so in NC. There have been a lot of storms that stall like Chantal, Helene, Florence, Floyd, Matthew, etc and just dump a ton of rain. I know that flooding is a big concern in a lot of areas besides NC. Charleston deals with a lot of sunny day flooding without a storm system.
Just be sure you understand what the insurance actually covers. We had some significant flooding in our area a while back and those with flood insurance were shocked at how absolutely terrible the coverage was. It didn’t come close to covering the damage to homes. Earthquake insurance was similar when we looked at it when we lived in an area at risk for them.
It is for me. Im a light sleeper and a tiny room and a small space usually with minimal soundproofing for a bathroom ( my experience with one night in a RV) would make me crazy. I can barely stand a hotel room. At home our room is designed so the bathroom visits are a minimal disturbance to each other.
