If you want to support small business take a moment to pay your medical bills too! My company is a small business, just not retail. For whatever reason most people don’t feel they should have to pay their co pays and deductibles. That little bit means a lot to a small medical practice getting squeezed as well.
I’m often surprised how hard it can be to find local businesses in the suburbs, where preplanned communities are all about giant chains 
That said, I live in the city and go out of my way to always support local businesses and pay with cash. (Credit card companies take a big bite when you use plastic) The only chains where I regularly shop are the gas station and the grocery store, although there are locally owned veggie and fruit stands I use during the summer months.
