So, parents w/letters (I'm not bitter), what are candidates observations so far?

Talked to my son on IM last night. While he told me Sunday with a chuckle to send the 64 cookies last night he said when he gets them he has to turn them over to the senior officer. He said he may be able to have a couple at the hand off point. Well I guess all in all they are like all my kids. We are a family.

I hope they all enjoy them and have a great trimester. :)

Go Merchant Marine beat Coast Guard

I guess every company is different. mine said “Dont send food and stuff till after acceptance day because our CTO just takes it”

what Co is your kiddo in?

4th co. Says no “goodies”.
OK. Rice Krispy Treats would be “goodies”.
How about protein bars?

Also, Skype disabled (probably everyone? Definitely 4th).

Not for nuttin, but does anybody have a list of dos/don’ts (I mean parent-wise)

Energy bars by the box are a yes.
Also powdered Gateraiid.

I dont know the no’s

I heard peanuts were a yes can anyone confirm that.

What kind of power bars are the best tasting? Would trail mix bars be ok?

he is in 1st Co

what about skype being disabled for everyone?
son seemed to figure that they didn’t know what all you can do with skype (call land lines and cell phones). AIM was working last night so we didn’t try skype

Is AIM working; I can get a message saying he is ‘signed off’, ‘idle’ or ‘online’ but when we try to send messages to one another they do not go through. He will email me and say he just sent a message and it does not deliver; and visa versa. I can receive other IM’s from AIM users but not his. Anyone have any insight or is AIM at the Academy working in spurts?

This was sent out recently to 08, 09, & 10, why they left out 11, I’m not sure. But its from our Chief Information Officer in charge of all our network stuff and gives an explanation to some of the problems you may be having.

M/N:

AIM and AOL IM is working fine and has been. What doesn’t work is/are the most recent releases of AIM software. So, if you visit the Service Center on the zero deck of CAORF, DoIT staff will help you install a release of AIM which does not have some of the problems of the latest release.

This makes a very important point you need to keep in mind: You cannot always download the latest version of a software product, unless you know for a fact it works without incident. Folks, like AOL, generally do a very good job in releasing new versions of their software. However, each new product release is guaranteed to “break” something that worked just fine in an earlier release.

V/r,

HDW

OK so that is why he asked me to run the same AIM 5.9 version that they are running - so I uninstalled 6.1 and installed 5.9. nothing. do you know if version 5.9 is the correct version that they should run at the Academy?

they are running AIM 5.9
also, as of last night all PC are forbidden from using skype until acceptance day. This came after my son got an email clarifiying that skype was installed on his laptop for him to use as he chooses! seems they just figured out that skype can be used to make phone calls to land lines and cell phones.
AIM 5.9 may not support video or audio chats, or their firewall may block that. (Skype video/audio worked fine)
AIM 5.9 was working well last night for IM

My son likes the DeFranco power bars. They have to be ordered online. I just ordered him them and received them in two day. The only thing is I just spent $50 on two boxes. Does he have to share them with his Company. Not that I don’t want him to share but that means I just spent $50 thinking he will have them to last a while and they may be gone in one minute.

he finally got it figured out on his end - we had a great chat between his mother, sister and myself. he actually likes the food, hates squaring corners.

We got skype working and had a great “conference call” going with Mom, Dad, Sis, and Girlfriend! It was amazing! All of you who keep telling us that we won’t recognize our kids at Parents Week-end…I’m beginning to belive you! My son seems so happy and confident and more like a “grown-up” already. He has been to Chapel for past 3 Sundays and couldn’t stop talking about the recessional hymn-The Mariners’ Hymn Eternal Father- and the color illustration in his nice new Bible with the leather USMMA cover! We were all looking at each other like “do we know him?” He’d completed next Monday’s homework yesterday! Couldn’t talk long cause he had to “clean his room and do some more reading!” Went on and on about his “favorite part” of day after getting up at 6:30 for color formation and the band plays a different song each day! He used to sleep till noon! I can’t wait to meet this kid!!!

Okay - just learning about skype so here’s a guestion for those that have more knowledge. Is this something that our kids out at sea can use to communicate with us. If my son is on a ship that has internet capability and he downloads skype will we be able to talk free to him as long as we laso have it. It also looks like it he has sypke and uses it to calls us on our land phone, it’s significantly cheaper than any phone card or internation cell phone. This seems like a perfect way to communicate during Sea Year or is it just too good to be true?

WOW…guess I should slow down on the typing - sorry for all of the errors ;-D

Ballstamom…
As the wife of still sailing husband, I can tell you from experience that no it will not work. Of course I am only referring to my husband’s ships but…ships do not have continued access to the internet. Their emails and internet feed is via satellite that is only shot out at certain times of the day. Therefore, Skype will not work. Also when communicating with anyone onboard ship, emails can only be text. No downloads, no pictures and even forwarding is frowned upon as is at great expense to send and retrieve large files via satellite. It would be so wonderful if we could get to that point with technology. For now, its plain 'ol written/I mean typed letters back and forth. I remember when(I cringe when my parents say that and now look at me) we had no email and the only way I could communicate with my husband was via a pay phone in some foreign port at HUGE rates. Needless to say, I love my email! Especially since son will be following in his footsteps.

if you check around he might run into- rarely. I did a video conference with skype from a 747 over germany last november and from India and honduras last june. (business traveling). ships have the same problem (see above).

Thanks kawalla and APE. On our way to dropping him off last week we ran into a 2/c that was just leaving the same ship and the mother mentioned how they were able to keep in touch via email almost daily. So far no emails from our son but our first call will hopefully come on Sunday when they arrive in Italy. Guess it’s still worth giving skype a try - just to become familiar with it.
