So? Who is watching...Girls?

Although I could relate to some aspects of the show, as the mother of a daughter that age (as a lot of us are) I found it incredibly depressing. I hate the tattoos. I would like to think she could find a better guy than the ones depicted in the show. I am hoping she doesn’t have to have either a well-timed miscarriage or abortion to get rid of an unplanned pregnancy. I am hoping she can find a better job than nanny. I am hoping she doesn’t lead men on or get groped by her boss. I guess I didn’t find any of the above very funny. I am trying to think what parts of the show I found amusing, as it is supposed to be a comedy. I can’t think of any offhand.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed “Bored to Death”. It was literate. I guess I was the only one, though, as it got canceled.

That’s what many guys think and hope but it’s certainly not universal among women. My dating/relationship behavior as a young woman was often more guy-like. I was not at all needy and very commitment averse. There were a lot of guys who had no idea what to do with that.

i’m riveted to it. I called a friend whose son went to St. Ann’s with Lena D. and my friend said that she was a bright girl always, but that she’d never watched the show and never would. She was weird on the subject. Those girls are so vulnerable…its so true to life.

Cartera45, we have been on so many threads together. Your last post explains things. I was under the impression you were a guy. :)

Krlilies, come on. Number 4? I guess that is better than number 5. Treating guys that poorly…

And then you women wonder why guys don’t commit. ;)

I like the character Alex and want him to continue on the show. If this was real life, Alex should tell the girl to go take a flying leap…

As should the character who is dating Allison’s character.

I don’t know what exciting means. You toy with each other and break up and make up over and over? :)

dstark - you’re not the only one who thought I was a guy. I also channel surf like a guy.

Cartera45, I am surprised.

By the way, I dislike needy. I would never and did not marry a needy person.

But…I don’t like the games…

“I like you”.
“I like you”.

“No. I really like you”.
“I really like you”.

“No. I love you.”.
“I love you”.

“Really?”
“Yes. I love you”.

“I have to break up with you”.

I like this show too…
Little bit of trivia about Allison Williams: I just re-watched Yale’s admission video from a couple of years ago (“That’s Why I Chose Yale” - [That's Why I Chose Yale - YouTube](<a href=“That's Why I Chose Yale - YouTube”>That's Why I Chose Yale - YouTube) ) and Allison Williams has a small singing part in it. She has a really good singing voice! Also explains how they got Brian Williams to be in it, I guess… :)

My favorite shows True Blood, The Newsroom, Weeds, Episodes, Web Therapy, and many more oo and also Big Brother I can’t leave out that right. Lol. No Girls show though lol :/

I find the show pretty authentic, that said I find Lena Dunham’s character in Girls and in Tiny furniture a pretty sad person. I found the first couple of sex scenes disturbing, not because I’m a mother of a 21 yr old daughter, but because the character seemed to have no voice, was letting herself be exploited by the boyfriend. haven’t seen every episode and have noticed more subtlety and a bit of tenderness between them develop, but still…I hope our “girls” don’t think they need to accept crumbs in the form of relationships. and I’m okay with them being women, embracing their sexuality, that’s not the problem, just hope they have some self determination around men, jobs, dreams, and aren’t just accepting anything…

A lot of 50 somethings here. what were you guys up to, sexually, back in the late 70s and early 80s? I am sure whatever thos show/your children are up to is PG rated in comparision! ;)

As far as TV shows go, I must say that Game of Thrones is AWESOME! Boardwalk Empire, Californication, Dexter, Hung, True Blood and Weeds are also pretty good.

Alexandre, 50-something Mom here. Alot of the same stuff went on with a different lexicon. “Committed relationship” wasn’t one of them but GF and BF was. Hook-ups were one night stands… IMHO alot of women got pretty used and abused in the name of sexual liberation. Even though kids were having sex it wasn’t talked about …maybe left over from the 60’s “good girl, bad girl” mentality. I have a feeling that the kids now discuss things more with their partners than we did. It seems more open that way. No flames, just my views on it. Oh, and if you were a virgin for Lord’s sake it wouldn’t be admitted to anyone. That was something to get rid of Freshman year.

Alexandre, no love for Spartacus? The 360 degree camera spins and CGI blood are fun to watch. It’s like a live comic book. I miss Andy Whitfield though. Thumbs up to GOT.

50 something mom here too, but my experiences were different from dke’s. I never felt that there was a lack of communication between partners and there was no hesitancy to talk about it. I would guess that we talked more openly about sex to our partners than young people today do, but I don’t really know how much kids generally today are talking to their partners. I didn’t see any stigma attached to being a virgin and no rush to lose one’s virginity. I had friends who left college as virgins and no one in my circle ever spoke of it as being unusual or something that needed to be remedied. We were very much a “to each his/her own” group.

I’m with cartera. In my college and post-college crowds there were virgins and non-, one night stands and long-term relationships (although the latter were more prevalent than the former). No one was judged for their behavior, and there was plenty of communication between partners. The Joy of Sex was handed around and discussed a lot. :)

“Why do girls, really they are young women, do this self destructive crap?”

Guys do lots of idiotic crap, too. It just doesn’t happen to be what this show is about. I’ve seen plenty of masochistic, low-self-esteem relationship decisions from guys. Stupid decisions at work, too, usually involving alcohol.

I agree that guys do destructive stuff too.

Another 50-something here.

I agree with cartera45 and Booklady
