So You Think You Can Dance- 2011 Season! - Merged Threads

About 2/3 of the show was all glitchy last night…no sound and freezed framed. It must have been our local station…the kids knew from texts from friends in other areas that everyone wasn’t having the problem, but it wasn’t our TV because we tried all of them (the commericals were like that, too, but the other stations werent). So frustrating.

I’m glad they didn’t send anyone home yet. First, those folks work so hard to get there. At least they get two more opening numbers and their other performances on TV. I really think that to a great extent, the voters were voting for choreography. The couples did a good job with what they were asked, but some weren’t asked to do much. Tyce is mostly worthless (I laugh inside whenever I think of Every Little Step.) I wasn’t initially fond of the Broadway guy, but when he danced for his life, I saw that he could do a lot more than he was asked to do in Tyce’s piece.

Mia as a judge…I’d like to read transcripts of her past comments…because what comes out of her mouth doesn’t make sense.

Oh, I also want to say happy summer and great to talk with y’all. There are some folks that I only talk to on the dance-y threads, so glad to see you again.

I love, love, love this show! I am happy to have Mary Murphy back. I know she can get on people’s nerves, but I enjoy her enthusiasm and appreciate her feedback. I could not stand Mia Michaels as a judge last year. Uggh! So glad she’s gone in that capacity, although I think she is a great choreographer and hope to see her on the show in that role.

Now, about last night’s show. Wow! I think it was a great decision. The dancers this year are so talented, it would be hard to send someone home already. Like someone else said, sometimes it’s about the choreography and not the dancer’s skill, so giving the dancers another week will help the audience get to know them better. Maybe this next time they will have a better vehicle to showcase their talents. Can’t wait for next week!!!

I have a feeling that next week the dancers will get genres way out of their own…like maybe the ballroom lady will get hip hop and the b-boy will get lyrical. At some point, they’ve got to make them all not look so fabulous so we’ll feel better about someone going home.

I’d love to hear about all the dancers who have injured themselves on the show, whether they were ever back to 100%, whether they’d do it again if they could.

I LOVE the broadway guy! I would have sent home Robert (the “woo” guy) and possibly the girl who danced first…not because she is not a fabulous dancer, but because i am over her hair always being in her face and over the “I am sexy” vibe she ALWAYS has when she dances. But I am very, very glad they sent nobody home.

Perhaps it was their plan to do this all along. It seemed that this week they did not really have many people dance far outside their genre. Next week hopefully they will push them a bit more (as was mentioned above).

SUCH a great season!!

I totally agree that this was a wise decision–I think they should do this every year, in fact, make the first elimination based on the combined voting for the first two episodes (though I’d be thrilled to see Jordan Casanova, the one who dances like a stripper and actually shook her boobs at the judges last night, head home immediately).

I adore Mary, shrieks and all. She’s so genuine and caring, and takes her judging job so very seriously. And I’m absolutely thrilled that Mia Michaels, that nasty beyotch, is not on the judging panel this year (though I do appreciate her choreography).

I agree the sexy thing got old real fast.

^^^ I agree. If I had to pick one of the girls to go home last night, I think it would have been her. Actually, I was kind of expecting Nigel to say something about her shaking those tassels. Maybe someone will give her some good advice and tell her to tone it down a bit. There’s a difference between being sexy and looking like a stripper. She is probably a great dancer, but that’s what came across.

Again, I’m glad everyone is getting two weeks to show what they can do.

I just gotta say that I do NOT think Mia Michaels is anything approaching a “beyotch”. her critiques were always straight on, no embellishments (which is what got her in trouble with some people, I suppose), honest and usually right-on from a technical point of view. I know people had a hard time with how she phrased things, but again, that was her very, very valid opinion as a dance professional. I miss her.

I also appreciate Mary Murphy as a judge, though the screaming does get old. That is why the Good Lord made fast-forward, though, on TiVo. :)

My problem with Mia is that she picked on some dancers unmercifully–she just decided she didn’t like them, for whatever reason, and nothing they could do was good enough. I recall her having to apologize more than once for her behavior. She’s not a nice person.

I think it was about giving the viewers a better chance to know the dancers, because honestly, I did not understand how some of those kids ended up in the bottom 6. Certainly not because of their ability. That’s the bad thing about these voting shows – people will vote for someone because they’re cute, because they liked the music, because the costume was their favorite color.

Apparently Jordan trained under the same teacher as Paula Van Oppen. Youtube “Paul Van Oppen 2008 jazz solo.” There seems to be a theme to this teacher’s choreography. It’s a shame, because Jordan really doesn’t need to do that; she’s a fantastic dancer.

Yikes. I just went and found that 2008 jazz solo. It’s pretty awful. I agree, Jordan is a fantastic dancer and I wish she would just do that and loose the “sexy” tag… It doesn’t have to be front and center in everything she does!

I’m hoping that this week everyone gets put well outside their comfort zone. I’d like to see what Jordan can do with ballroom, or what Jess can do with hip hop.

Or what Evetta would do with hip hop!!

Ballet is the foundation of dance, so those with extensive ballet training should rise to the top – always assuming they are being judged on ability, not extraneous factors (which they certainly will be in the viewer voting). This puts the street dancers at a disadvantage, and probably Iveta as well. Dancers like Jordan, Nick, Melanie, and Ricky should be able to transition to other forms far more readily.

So, what did ya’ll think about last night’s performances??

I personally had a hard time deciding who NOT to vote for! I think the one female dancer who stands out for me, though I was not crazy about the choreography she was given last night, is Melanie (the girl with really short dark hair). Also Ryan (girl with really long blonde hair). All the girls are so great, though!

If I had to guess, I’d guess maybe Jess (the Musical Theatre dance guy…I think that’s his name) would be one who is on the line tonight…

Thoughts??

My guess is the Bollywood couple will be in the bottom three.

Thoughts? As long as you asked:

I think Melanie and Marco are the dream team.

I love to watch Ryan…I know that it is because she is the dancer who most resembels my own D when she is dancing. BUT, Ryan needs to learn that it’s okay not to smile. There are other expressions and some choreography calls for no smiles at all.

I thought Wadi did great on the cha cha (is was Wadi wasn’t it?)

Nice to see Debbie Reynolds but I sure hope she doesn’t actually get a vote in which 4 dancers actually go home. (We thought it would have been so funny if she had an earpiece and if some Bollywood expert fed her lines, so that she gave an extremely technical critique of the Bollywood.)

Just last week MM was saying how great the costumes are on SYTYCD. Did those great costumers take the week off to celebrate? Poor Jess! In those belted cropped pants his legs looked like they were about 12" long. He should have been in a light color and his partner in a dark color. It looked like he was lifting a giantess. (I admit we were howling with laughter.) Also, poor Jordan. The cut of that lilac colored dress made her look fat…it made her butt look a mile wide…it’s a bad costume that can make such a beautiful, fit girl look heavy.

The Coming Home hip hop did not touch me - sorry. I thought Alex was to weak and stiff. I think that Nigel agreed. He said something like with such a great, moving piece he didn’t need to talk about the actual dancing.

Tadd(sp?) did not deserve the effusive praise he got. I feel like he’s the least versatile male, and last night his shoulders were so stiff that they made me uncomfortable during that pseudo-Viennese waltz. The dances they choreograph on this show are less authentic than the ones on dancing with the stars. Jordan however, was OUTSTANDING. As was the couple who got punched in the face (still learning names sorry), and alexander/sasha were amazing. that intro to their dance was perfect. They both nailed their movements to every single accent in the beginning. Overall, I’m biased against this show because I hate contemporary dancing with a few exceptions here and there. I will be much happier once they move into ballroom; this is my first season watching.
