Soccer ID camps

@cinnamon1212 I thought of this forum when I heard the Tufts head coach Shapiro was just hired as head coach at Harvard. I know you liked him and he has that reputation for honest feedback post camp. I also saw Harvard has a winter ID camp this wknd so I am sure it will be well run. I had not heard good things about the old H coaching staff so that is not one my son attended in the past.

@GKUnion

@AmBuddha
I am guessing the IVY coach that sent the camp email to the entire team is Yale. Am a right?

@2022soon oh yes, following the Shapiro/Harvard saga pretty closely! Though, not attending the ID camp this weekend :slight_smile:

@cinnamon1212
He is going to be amazing! I’ve heard the old H coaching staff and unfortunately players had a negative vibe. He is straight forward hard working and positive according to my son and other parents. It should be fun to watch.

LOLZ. Such a small world…Then again, you have to cast a wide net, and they did win the Ivy league. Not everyone can use mail-merge…

Interesting, I had not seen that Shapiro was hired, there was a lot of speculation that would happen, but hadn’t heard it did. Sounds like a positive step for the Harvard program which has struggled of late.

@AmBuddha
Knew it would be Yale…
Stannard casts a wide net yes, but in my opinion he also communicates with players to get them to camp then does not have the
common courtesy to respond to an email after camp. All about getting his camp numbers up which he brags about all through camp. Once at camp players are separated out with some groups being watched and grouped with strong players and others put with D3 coaches and very weak players. Yes they did win IVY but then went on to lose in the first round and have a very poor showing.

@Midwestmomofboys Yes! Very positive step for Harvard, although I noticed assistants were the same.

@2022soon My son got an eval from the Yale one-day camp he attended that was very odd…even the positive stuff wasn’t accurate, and then he realized there was another boy who resembled him who fit the description. He and my son are of the same ethnicity and they were the only 2…so go figure. The upside of the experience was that a coach from another school spotted him and began recruiting him in earnest so all’s well that ends well!

Gossip on soccer boards is that at least one of the Harvard assistants is moving to BC.

@cinnamon1212 which soccer boards do you visit? I’m only aware of d3boards - any other good ones? Seems a logical source of info about programs/coaches/etc.

@lucky18 I’m kind of addicted to New England Soccer Journal, but that is a subscription online magazine. They post an article or two every day. They’ve interviewed Josh Shapiro already, and there’s a reference in there from him looking for new assistants.

There’s also Talking Soccer, which is mostly terrible – it’s not moderated and many posters are jerks – but on the other hand they were the first to start talking about the Shapiro hire, so sometimes there’s good information there.

@AmBuddha glad it worked in the end! Ridiculous that they didn’t mark your son correctly though.
@cinnamon1212 sounds like he’s making good moves already!! Good scoop.

@cinnamon1212 I check NESJ every day, it’s a pretty good resource.

@GKUnion yes. Plus they cover prep school soccer, which is my world – probably the only place that really does!

Great Thread.
I’m mostly on CC for my older son who is going through the recruiting process in a niche sport.

My younger son plays soccer, but he’s only in 7th grade. No, I’m not really that crazy, but I had no idea how soccer recruiting worked. Now I have some info. I think it goes…

  1. Does your kid want to play sportsball in college?
  2. Get an honest sense of how good your kid is.
  3. Hope your kids club goes to some good tourneys where he/she might be seen.
  4. Get out the checkbook and go to an ID camp
  5. Mull the feed back and determine really what level your kid can play sportsball
  6. Email coaches that are likely fits. Get on their radar.
  7. 2nd mortgage on the house, go to a few more ID camps. (Count the kids at the camp. Multiply that number by the fee. Consider a career change.)
  8. More emails.
  9. Official visits?

Anyhow good luck to all of you. I’ll be back in a few years if the lil dude still wants to kick a ball.
