That was an amazing game. Does anyone know the reason that the last Russian goal didn’t count? Was it something to do with the net or was it some other penalty?

Yes it was the net. It was not secured.

The net was off its moorings and dislodged slightly. The linesman is supposed to notice those things and whistle the play dead before a goal gets disallowed.

I read an article tonight where one of Jonathan Quick’s teammates on the Kings was interviewed. Can’t recall his name but he plays for Russia and he said that dislodging the net is one of Quick’s little tricks.

I don’t know why Quick would have a habit of intentionally dislodging the net in that way-- that goal would have counted if Quick had been wearing a Kings jersey.

Quick might not work very hard NOT to dislodge the net during scrums, when life is getting exciting in the paint. No goalie is going to try to keep the net on the moorings then. But that’s a different situation: the goalie is trying to get a whistle and a faceoff so his teammates can regroup.

I wondered the same thing, CF, as I know that the rule in the NHL is different. It’s possible that there may have been a language barrier issue in the interview. Reading it, it’s impossible to tell. Anyway, it was an exciting game. Wish I could have been at this one with my family and friends!

D wanted to get cable since the Internet access has been iffy with all the protests and the resulting governmental crack down on the media, but the streets were blocked, she was stuck in her apartment, and no one would come to install it anyway… Did not see the men’s skate and was bummed. A guy competing for her “new” country got on the podium!

Looking forward to more Olympic hockey! Brawls do not impress me.

Buns on burner?

Yessss!!! :D

Lol - love it! It’s taken it a while to click

Woke up at 5 today just to see both J.R. Celski and Shani Davis disappoint.

USA has officially lost this Olympics.

Just saw Tara and Johnny on the late-night broadcast. I love their chemistry, for lack of a better word. Apparently they have adjoining rooms at the hotel so that they can coordinate.

Someone asked where curling comes from. It’s a centuries-old game from Scotland. The stones are made from two types of rock that are found only on a Scottish island.

I’ve seen almost no medal ceremonies. From comments by several athletes, I feel like they’re not being presented until the next day. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, why? I miss them.

Big disappointment in figure-skating circles, LasMa – at every other Olympics, figure skating medals were presented immediately after the conclusion of the event, right in the arena. At Sochi, they are all being presented in a separate medals plaza a day later. Very disconnected. I’ve not been to an Olympics, but I’ve been to world championships, and seeing the new medalists skate by with their medals is such a pleasure.

And there I was blaming NBC for not showing the medal ceremonies. Guess they’re not guilty - this time

I wonder why? I haven’t heard athletes complain, but I’d think they would prefer to receive their medals in front of the crowd who saw the medal-winning performance.

ETA – I’m watching the ice dance short program live right now. Tara and Johnny are just too fabulous today!

In figure skating they have “flower ceremony” at the conclusion of the event. I assumed it was a medal ceremony, but aparently not.

Just watched the daughter of the CC poster (recorded so behind live broadcast.) Was rooting for them but, sadly, likely didn’t score high enough to make it to the long program portion of competition. But a very proud moment, I’m sure, for her parents.

Canada beats Finland in OT (oh, Finland, should have put Antti Niemi in net) so the seedings are set:

Sweden, with their initial bracket of three patsies, gets the #1 seed. They’ll face the winner of Slovenia/Austria. I’m sure they’re shaking in their skates.

USA gets second seed, will face Czech/Slovakia winner. Canada will have Switzerland or Latvia. Finland will have Russia. Or, if Russia doesn’t beat Norway, Canada will face Norway and the Siberian Hockey League will be very good next year.

Too lazy to look this up and I’m betting that folks on here will know the answer. What is the difference between pairs skating and ice dancing?
