Sochi 2014

I agree on the Bode Miller interview. I was yelling at the interviewer to leave him alone. For crying out loud. And then the camera continued to follow him.

I’m enjoying the ice dancing more also. I do remember it being more rote in the past. Now, the pairs and singles seem more rote as they faithfully execute each required element in pretty much the same spot in the program. Does anybody not end with spins? The push for harder and harder jumps is just getting old to me. I remember, back when I was in high school, the battle of the Brians was a huge deal and it was speculated that one or both might attempt a quad. Now they are all expected to do a quad to win. But most of them have lost their grace. I also kind of chuckle when the commentators are really critical of some of these skaters when they are former skaters who never were expected to do the kinds of stunts that must be done now to win.

Davis/White reminded me of Astaire and Rogers. They were fantastic.

SO agree on the Bodie Miller interview – I was also shouting at the tv to leave him alone. They played it on the west coast feed, too, so NBC chose to leave it in when they had their chance to remove it. I’m going back to Canadian TV as soon as the ice dancing is over.

Wow - a Dutch short track skater sets an OR in 1500 m. Holy guacamole. She looked relaxed and so fluid on the ice!

Agree with everyone who said NBC did a horrid job with that Bode interview. Idiots.

Never saw ice dancing before. It looks very lovely and the two US champs look like they are flying in perfect harmony! Never have seen much in the way of winter sports–hard to ID with it. :)

Shameful display by the reporter interviewing Bode. And then to have the audacity to try to comfort him by touching him after her barrage of questions brought him to tears!

I never used to watch ice dancing. It’s become much more entertaining. The American pair was amazing. I actually got goose bumps watching them skate. Loved that Tara and Johnny felt no need at all to talk during their performance. Too bad the prime time comms didn’t.

Christin cooper was the interviewer. She has been blasted by the ny times, ap reporters and more on that interview. Kudos to Bode for walking away. My gosh, the man won bronze lets depress him must have been the intention. Not to mention the American who won silver was pretty much ignored. At the medal ceremony they cut to Bode the most, surely hoping for an emotional breakdown. NBC is so ridiculous. Can’t stand Matt Lauer, Meredith was just as bad. If they quit their theatrics and reported on the sports, we would learn so much more about the 100’s of American athletes they choose to ignore. I do not need Matt and Al trying the luge yet again this year. Tell me about the girl from missouri who’s dad scraped to go see her speed skate in the Olympics and all she had to do just for the opportunity. Tell me about the athletes, I really don’t care about the nbc reporters’ personal lives.

Bob costas is slated to return tonight, with improved eyes supposedly.

How did I miss Dreamy McNorway? :)

I just watched the Matt Lauer interview with the two skiers. I thought it was fairly well done. First of all, he started with the silver medalist which is where he should start. Even without the emotional story of losing his brother, Bode would have been a big story due to his longevity in the sport, his records, and his personality, not to mention the fantastic practice runs he had laid down. They had been hyping him for weeks or even months. His first races were disappointing. Matt allowed him to answer with dignity after that horrid post-race interview that was shown last night, hours after it occurred. I don’t blame the interviewer; NBC should have edited that tape in the hours between the race and the broadcast.

Bode is being a lot kinder IMO than he needs to be about that reporter - I’m still so disturbed about her questioning!!

Towards the end of the article are a couple of tweets Bode posted post-tacky reporter interview.

I agree abasket. It was over the line. Anyone who has lost someone close knows how raw that loss feels and it never really goes away. You just learn to deal with it.

Funny how they think it’s “ok” to ask about a dead brother … but then not about the horrible custody issues. I’m not saying they should ask about the latter, but that they should back off. I mean really, is it harder to race because your brother died almost a year ago or because you’re in a custody battle over an infant where you’ve been in court over and over and over and have even been arguing over the kid’s name? They were in court in January. But instead they ask about the dead brother because that makes better exploitive TV.

BTW, I suggest recording the ice dance final live - it’s early afternoon on NBCsports (or whatever Versus is called now). The commentary by Tara and Johnny Weir is much better and the event flows naturally without the editing. Same exact video otherwise.

Ice dance is on now. If you want to record set it quickly.

FWIW, NBC did do a story “about the girl from missouri who’s dad scraped to go see her speed skate in the Olympics and all she had to do just for the opportunity.”
I don’t understand all the hate for Matt Lauer. I like him … but wish he would get rid of the facial hair!

Regarding Matt Lauer, I’m one of the folks who still hasn’t forgiven him for what he did to Ann Curry. I’ll be back to GMA once the Olympics are over.

I’m loving ice dancing and thankful that today is an academic holiday and I can watch with Tara and Johnny. They are candid without being mean, not to mention fun to look at.

I agree with everyone on the Bode Miller interview. It was exploitative.

I’ve tried to catch as much of the events live as I can. I’d much rather the actual action be the story, rather than what NBC chooses to edit for primetime with their additional hype and faux suspense.

I stayed up late to watch the US women curlers, who have had an epically bad Olympics. :frowning: I saw them in qualifying last November, and they were actually pretty good, and came into Sochi with at least a possibility of a bronze medal. I don’t know what happened to them. They looked exhausted last night. Sad.

I agree about the cross country women’s relay. Very exciting finish.

Davis and White are so much fun to watch on and off the ice! In preparation for their dance, Meryl was putting some finishing touches on her partner’s face, and the camera caught this in action. She noticed that they were being filmed, and as if nothing happened, proceeded to powder Charlie’s nose. He was sitting still without a peep. This is the guy who as a kid thought that it was yucky to hold a girl’s hand! Glad they had such a great performance! And their moms were having a blast together in the stands.
