Love the idea of a cheese board. I’m trying to figure out what to do to make it a little special for my vegetarian son and his GF. Cheeses sound like a good idea.
This is a really delicious dip to serve with pita bread and would go well with a cheese board. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017492-muhammara-red-pepper-and-walnut-spread If you can’t find the pomegranate molasses the internet has various ideas for substitutions.
These are yummy and festive! I use guava paste and arugula instead of quince paste and watercress. I usually skip the coating in almonds, though I have done it. The combination of the salty cheese, the bitter arugula, sweet guava paste is delicious. I use frilly toothpicks. Everyone loves them!

I also like adding mejool (sp?) dates split in half on cheese or charcuterie boards. Stuffed olives, mixed nuts. I think the presentation is what makes them festive. You can google and find lots of pretty images of boards online.
These are also fun, but not very Thanksgiving-ish:

EDIT: or what about this?

I love baked Brie!
Talked to the in-town kid and spouse yesterday. It will be just the two of us this year. DIL’s brother wants to host Thanksgiving this year, after several years in another state. We have had S and DIL here for the vast majority of holidays lately, so we will see them another time. Brother and his partner are social butterflies and have no boundaries as far as masks and social distancing. CrossIng my fingers that he will at least try to reduce exposure since their Dad is 80. But no, we aren’t making them have two dinners, nor are we going to brother’s house.
While we have had the majority of our holidays away from extended family, this is a first (unless you count the year son was three months old and I cooked a 20 lb turkey 1500 miles from any family…).
@sushiritto - Ribs! Just the idea I needed, as an extra.
About breakfast: our’s is often bagel/egg sandwiches from the local (believe it or not) Mexican walk-in. (They do make the bagels.) It’s always a source of stress for me as it’s one of those things that fills you up for hours. But the girls insist.
Here’s the baked brie I always love to make: https://www.mccormick.com/recipes/appetizer/cranberry-rum-brie
My MIL used to make caramel nut sweet rolls for breakfast and every year I say I will too, but I never do! Luckily my husband think any holiday is a good excuse to make waffles, so that is what we usually have.
In the past (PC = PreCovid?), we’ve simplified family gatherings of 4 or more, into pot-luck. Everyone brings hors d’oeuvres. Some are fancy for those who enjoy it. Some are very simple, for the non-cooks. EASY, plenty of variety, and a lot of fun.
@1214mom to make your cheeseboard special I would add honeycomb, some good nuts, a fig/orange spread, stuffed olives and marinated spreadable garlic along with a couple of good soft cheeses and a couple of good hard cheeses. We always add salami and prosciutto since we eat meat. I like to serve with a crusty baguette and some plain crackers so you get all of the cheese flavor.
Add a few edible flowers here and there and a sprig or two of rosemary, and it will look like it came from a fancy restaurant. ![]()
Just 2 of us this year. Typically we go to my parents along with other extended family so it’s been a long time since I’ve cooked a whole Thanksgiving meal.
I thought about skipping the traditional fare and making something else but I gave my husband the choice and he wanted a turkey, more for the leftovers made into turkey sandwiches more than anything else.
So:
Smaller turkey
Gravy
Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Cranberry sauce - both homemade and Ocean Spray jellied
Salad with stilton, apples, toasted pecans and red onion
Pumpkin Roll cake with cream cheese frosting
We never do breakfast or lunch on Turkey Day. We can grab some yogurt or a handful of nuts to tide us over if needed.
@doschicos , my husband could do without any and every traditional Thanksgiving dish if he could still have turkey sandwiches. Which reminds me, I need to bake and freeze plain white bread this weekend. Because white meat with white mayonnaise on white bread is his perfect dinner.
We have a little turkey, and I’ll make stuffing, potatoes, gravy , cranberries, something green, and pie just for the two of us. The pumpkin pie will be baked the day before and open game for Wednesday dessert and Thursday breakfast. I don’t like it, so it’s all for DH and it’s more fun to see him enjoy it before the big feast. I do intend to make my favorite caramel pecan tarts and freeze most of them for Christmas.
