Some Freshman Year Questions

Philosophy department does have a lot of students. I think part of it is that we have a Religion/Philosophy requirement where you either have to take two Religion courses or one Religion and one Philosophy. Because there aren’t any AP credits for either department, those two departments get free students! I’m in Philosophy 235 right now. It’s Existentialist Philosophy and I LOVE IT! I’ve considered becoming a Philosophy major or minor because of it. I have a really great professor and I love the material. We’re reading The Stranger right now. We’ve read some Kierkegaard, Niezsche, Dostoevsky, Sartre, Tolstoy, Heidegger, and more Camus. I really love this class haha.

A lot of people here seem regard our philosophy department as a “joke,” but I think that’s just because one, philosophy universally has an…interesting reputation as a major, and two, our philosophy department gives a LOT less busy work than the other departments. In my philosophy class, I have mostly just the readings. We have no exam. We have three open-book, open-note tests that we can discuss with each other and with the professor, and the only homework is a weekly one-page “reflection paper” (ie. first person) on something we’ve read or discussed that week. In terms of work, yeah, it is a joke. But I’ve learned SO much. I’ve taken more from that class than from some of my other classes combined.
