I think spring break is even riskier than Thanksgiving/Christmas. For the holidays most kids go home. Judging by the holiday plans thread, that will be a fairly quiet time this year (obviously there is still the travel risk). However, spring break is usually spent with other college students instead of family and can often include risky behavior (even in normal years).
Add University of Rhode Island to the list.
Add Yale. Will start first of Feb and go to May. Five one day breaks will be scattered throughout semester on different days (one on Monday, one on Tues, etc).
The University of Oklahoma announced yesterday that they will go fully online after Thanksgiving, start spring semester a week later and eliminate spring break 2021.
Bucknell: No spring break. Starting the semester 2 weeks later on Feb. 1. Will go 14 weeks straight with no breaks. Exams on campus. Graduation still planned as scheduled for May 23. Hoping to be in person.
I am all for cancelling spring break, but seeing fall breaks cancelled and some kids are struggling, at least the Yale schedule has individual days off . Even a Tuesday/Wed break somewhere in March would be nice. These kids and professors just need small breaks.
Add Davidson though they are also adding 2 mid semester breaks of 2 days each midweek to break up the semester. Students are expected to remain on campus during those breaks. Classes starting 2 weeks later than usual on Jan 25th and finishing by April 30th. All students except seniors and some athletes expected to depart campus the first weekend of May and take finals remotely.
Bowdoin shortening spring break to a Wed-Sun and kids cannot leave campus. They did the same with fall break which is happening now. They are urging students to relax and take a break. Lots of activities planned - bonfires, badmitton tournament, movies on the lawn, etc. Gave students a long list of suggestions for how to spend their time not studying!
Northeastern: no spring break. Winter break extended one week for 1/19 start. No big deal for us.
Ithaca College is having one day off in the middle of March. They’re also starting the spring semester later than usual, but ending around the usual time.
Penn State system-wide will start in mid-January and end April 30, no spring break. They will be observing MLK Day as usual, with service projects across campus, but no classes.
Add Northeastern to the list.
Pitt also cancelled spring break. Classes start one week later than originally planned.
