To answer the question about drying: Yes, the salad spinner is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

There are two parts: a clear plastic bowl and basket like insert. Just wash your greens in the bowl, then lift it out into the basket part (allowing any grit to settle to the bottom of the bowl). Dump the water out of the bowl and spin it dry. No more cleanup than a bowl.

I just rinse mine off with hot water immediately after each use – give it a soapy hot water wash every few uses.

I have always washed bagged salad greens. Some of it is really nasty. I don’t think the idea is to remove every last trace of bacteria. I mean, the stuff grows in dirt, doncha know? Rather, the idea is to get rid of stuff that you don’t want to be eating.

I can’t help myself: I too have to “knock on wood” before I say this -

I never wash bagged salad - eat it all the time
Won’t even think of rinsing/wiping eggs, bananas, melons, etc.
Things like apples and pears get a quick run under water and then a quick dry with a paper towel
I eat at salad bars and just don’t “think too much” about what’s going on there
Won’t touch the anti-bacterial stuff at work or anywhere else unless there is some really obvious reason to do so (some sneezing runny nosed person has just handed me something…)

I must have a very good immune system because I very very rarely get stomach upsets or colds or the flu. Neither do my hubby or kids. Maybe we’ve just been very lucky. Either way, I don’t think I’m going to change. (I have my own “things” to worry about. Don’t need to add anything else!)

Oh yea - none of us got the H1N1 vaccine either. I guess we’re just living on the edge…
