alwaysamom - Agreed. I’d be surprised if rates don’t go up when a permissive user has an accident. There is another issue if your kid is borrowing a car. You don’t know how much insurance the owner is carrying on that car and the car could be under insured - presenting a problem if there is a serious accident with serious injuries

None of us can really give you info you can rely upon, because insurance varies widely from state to state. We can safely assume that the various insurance companies will hash it out. In my state, the insurance is on the car, but the “fault/accident record” lies with the driver. We had house guests from Europe once, who got in a single car accident while attempting to avoid a road hazard. Our insurance paid, our friends paid our deductible, and our insurance did not go up, because we were not driving. They did ask us “Will you be allowing this friend to drive your car again?” Our answer was no and that was that. But that was our state,(CA) so that may not apply to you.

Most important, no one was hurt, cars are easily replaced or repaired. One good outcome could be that these young people begin to feel a little less invincible, a little more grateful for their good fortune. Cartera 45 makes an excellent point about possible under-insurance. I know our state’s minimum requirements are not nearly enough, especially in the medical payment category. One head injury could mean months in intensive care…

How nice that you are spending holidays with a son who is just fine after such a scary ordeal! Blessings!!

I just realized that you asked us “What else can we do?” None of us really answered that. How about baking some home made goodies for them, or, sending them a gift basket of store-bought goodies for them to enjoy, or a gift certificate to a restaurant?
