Would echo that this is exactly what eBay is for. The only caveat is that you need to start early, because you never know what’ll be available week-to-week. You’ll possibly also need additional time for alterations. My two older boys now own their own tuxes–and they are not the drivel you’ll find in most rental places. One is from Saks and is a linen-wool blend–nice for our late spring climate. I forget the brand of the other one but it has a lovely shawl collar (my favorite) and looks stunning on him. We also got tux shirts + other incidentals on eBay. I don’t think I paid more than $40 for either tux; probably not more than $60-$70 each all in (except for shoes).

$65 at Syms last year to buy (boys size).
Less than $100 to rent on Long Island, if I remember correctly.

i went to men’s warehouse to get mine. my folks covered the tux, i decided to get arround $40 in accessories. it ended less than $200.

but things can def. add up when you consider that, tickets, dinner, etc.

We bought our son a tux last year for junior prom at a vintage store for around $100 for tux, vest (black), tie (black), and shirt (white). He wore it for formal nights on a recent cruise, for senior pictures, and will wear it for prom this year. We seem to have at least one formal event a year, so the purchase made a lot more sense than renting. H has lots of cufflinks, so the kids have just borrowed those. One of these days, that will be a good Christmas present. H still wears the tux he has had for the past 25 years and it fits him fine, but he has multiple bow ties and cumberbunds to make it “different.” Our kids have both opted for the long ties rather than the bow ties, but have worn H’s bow tie once in awhile.

Read this thread and all the links in it http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/4748945-post23.html from the “revolving topics” thread stickied at the top of the parents cafe. Lots of good tips and pointers there. We bought both boys tuxes at Syms. Great deals and lots of use out of them.

Thanks for all the pointers.

He had 1/2 hour today after school before his tennis match so his date and I accompanied him and he/they selected a black tux and vest with white shirt and rosy pink tie to match her dress. With his dark hair and eyes he’ll look smashing!!!

Made it out the door for just about $100!

When we have more time, I would like to consider purchasing one perhaps - I think he’s still growing though so we’ll at least wait till fall…
