Sophomore at Pitt - Ask Me Anything

@stemkid My friend just got back to me with more specifics on her classes. She said that her gen eds and electives were not bad, and the “weed out” classes for her would be CS447, 449, and 1501. She also said that the hardest one she took was 1501.

Thank you so much, I appreciate your help.

My son was accepted to Dietrich as an undecided major. Do you know how difficult transferring into the business school CBA or the Information Science (not CS) major in SCI is? There is a lot of info about the CS major. I would like to hear opinions on the Information Science major. Thank you!

Transferring is not very difficult from everything I know. The advisors in Dietrich are incredibly helpful and equipped to handle these situations. If you son’s advisor seems incompetent, ask him to ask his classmates for the name of a competent one and request a transfer (in engineering you switch advisors by asking the head advisor to approve the change). They have a lot of undecided students in their school and are well prepared to set students up so they are on the same playing field once they enter another school. SCI is a relatively small school in comparison to the other schools, so this is good because it means that there’s not a lot of red tape and it’s easy to work with high up faculty - they will be able to transfer your son in without many issues, and if there are any, then the faculty will be able to handle it because I know they all work closely together and are such a collaborative group. I hope that this helped, I’ll be checking this more frequently now (quarantine is boring!) if you have any further questions.

1.are pitt grades assigned on a curve
2. How is the diversity at pitt

Hi!

  1. Pitt’s grading is entirely up to the professors. So yes, I have had professors who grade on a curve (more common in harder classes like Physics I and II), and there are classes where no curve is offered (e.g all of my math classes). Professors will usually specify this at the beginning of the term, and most of my departmental classes are NOT on a curve. The only curve I have experienced has been in gen ed courses.
  2. The diversity at Pitt is pretty decent. Being a school in the city, there are definitely professionals and city residents that are mixed in with the crowd on campus. As far as the school itself, I would say I mostly notice Caucasian students and Asian students. A lot of the professors are from different areas of the world and have come here to teach. I have never come across students treating each other differently based on race or culture, or based on any way they identify themselves. There is definitely a place for everyone here and most students are respectful of that. I hope that these answers help! Please let me know if there is anything I can further clarify.
