Sorry Duke, but even your Dean likes Rice =P

Provost selected
Current Duke dean to take over in July

Well, to be fair, Dean Forman is leaving Rice for Emory.

And Gary Wihl, ex-dean of Rice’s School of Humanities, left Rice to serve as WashU’s dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences.

Ha.

^Hmm, why is Dean Forman leaving Rice to come to Emory. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad because he seems to have done a good job at Rice so I’m sure he’ll benefit Emory … I’m just curious about his reasoning. Just a guess but money may have something to do with it.

I think he wants to get more involved in leading university research initiatives, and the Dean of Undergrads main role is to assist students, not really to focus on research. I feel that as Dean of Emory College, he can be more involved in research than as Dean of Undergraduates at Rice.

Its not because he views Emory as better than Rice… I actually got to meet with him at a reception I went to and he explained that Duke, Rice, and Emory are all peer schools… they all just have different atmospheres.

Its so weird that we have someone coming from Duke and someone leaving to Emory… Rice, Duke, and Emory were my top choices at this time last year so I feel like everything is converging again.

OK, no one knows for sure the reasons why. I’m sure they all have their reasons, both publicly disclosed and privately personal. It doesn’t matter.

Deans move around a lot. It’s not really a big deal.

Time will tell how big of an impact each one will make. Otherwise, alam1 I don’t think you should waste time speculating reasons why.

I think the best way to handle this is to just have a little laugh at Duke’s expense, as the OP seemed to intend by sticking his tongue out at them.

I feel like Rice is undergoing a major change with their administration recently.
Shumway, from UT-Austin, was recently named dean of humanities at Rice after Wihl transferred to WashU. ([Rice University | News & Media](http://www.media.rice.edu/media/NewsBot.asp?MODE=VIEW&ID=14134))
