DGD had a two and a half hour assessment today with a team of OT, SLP, and developmental specialist. She did not qualify for total services, because her skill levels were too high (Yay!!! Glad to know she is on track!) but she did qualify for 6 months of speech services, then a re-eval. They will provide her services at her daycare center, and she has an appointment next week with an ENT and will get a hearing test and oral checkup. Double yay!!!
A huge part of my therapy was making sure that the parent followed through with the child and the homework.
We always made the homework fun, entertaining, and quick- three minutes a day.
Parents would report back to me (and my team) that their kids did not want to stop doing the homework!
I had to tell the parents to please try to keep it short because we wanted the children to be enthusiastic about doing the homework the next day, and the next day, until the next homework assignment.
Speech and language success hinges on really good feelings about the activities in Speech.
I always had “graduation parties” for the kids; even the high school kids looked forward to their graduation parties.
Plus they were my models. Anytime a student graduated from Speech, I gave them a certificate and I also gave them a forever coupon. They could come back to Speech at any time, and model good speech for my current students. The graduated students could always come back for every party and would lead the games “section” of the party.
With the highschoolers, it was always about the food. I had them order online: pizza, Thai, Chinese, etc. Any food that did not upend allergies, was ordered. I made sure that my students had fun and that I also had fun.
