Spending freeze February

42 tubes!

Just kidding. But if I had my way we would never run out of anything. There’d always be a stash somewhere.

It warms my heart to have so many help me on my journey. I feel like I wanted to make this a small commitment, one month.

I would never be able to agree to a whole year, I’m hoping that baby steps turn into bigger steps. And change the way I think about shopping and buying stuff.

Okay, have been thinking about this thread since I read just the OP this morning. I’m in! My weakness isn’t for socks or mugs, etc. when I already have a full supply. Nor is it for anything bigger like an iPad (still have mine that I’ve had about 5 years and no need for an upgrade).

Mine is for anything that I think will make my life easier, better, etc. Or a new product that I think I’ll like (thinking of make up or a beauty or household item). I look up Good Morning America’s deals and steals every Thursday I remember and, while I don’t buy anything most of the time, I’ll periodically see something and think that it would be fun/helpful to have one of the items featured. Has anyone been on slickdeals? Probably shouldn’t mention it here but that’s another weakness in that I come across items that are either at a great price point so I go for it (don’t really need another pair of boots but I love that brand/style/color and it’s SUCH a good deal) or I discover some item I didn’t even know existed and think I’ll appreciate it. Some are hits and, no surprise, some are not.

So, for me, starting Feb 1, I will force myself to not go on slickdeals, not look up GMA or The View deals and, when buying necessities on Amazon, not allow any “creep”. I also periodically go on a couple clothing sites that have good sales and see what’s available. I’ll buy for either myself or the kids even when it’s not truly needed. Will have to stay away from those sites too. Hard part is, I really enjoy my hunting, finding and purchasing!

@deb922 I’ll do it.

My main issue is with boredom shopping, often at a thrift store. Our good local one happens to be closed until March so that temptation is gone.

I won’t count restaurants/bars, have a long weekend girl getaway where i can’t avoid that coming up. But no “things”.

Hmmm…I have some struggles with home decor and home organizers. That temptation to get something better-updated-more in-style, this year’s trend, etc.

That marketing works a number on me.

The 42 tubes of toothpaste reminds me of a story from when my daughter was in college. Every time I sent her a care package I would slip in some toiletries - a shampoo, toothpaste, body wash, etc. Just trying to make her life easier so she wouldn’t need to run to CVS as often. One year during move out when we went to pack up her stuff, she had 7 extra deodorants which I had sent her during the year (in addition to how every many she used over the course of the year.) This has become a big joke for us now - “hey you need me to send you deodorant”

“Just kidding. But if I had my way we would never run out of anything. There’d always be a stash somewhere.”

Once, we almost ran out of TP. Stashes of certain products are beneficial for your marriage longevity. I never argue with Mr. that we have enough TP.

Ok I am in. I have already booked spring break and knowvof no other travel purchases that are needed in Feb. I love to plan trips! Any spending in Feb on clothes, shoes, misc “ stuff” will be with gift cards received in the past only.

I’m going to join in. We’ve been in our new house for about 6 months and I feel like all I do is spend. My wallet needs a break. Plus, February is a short month.

If I had my way, we would never run out of anything either. We need that backup toilet paper and toothpaste for a peaceful marriage.

My weakness is household and kitchen gadgets. Things that either motivate me to cook or to clean.

I made one change a few months ago that is helping a bit. I still look at Amazon and put things in my cart, but I don’t buy them. I save them for later. I’ve been doing this for a few months, and when I wait 2-4 weeks before buying, I get over that excited, impulsive interest in some of the items, and end up deleting them. But it is hard to wait and see if I’ll change my mind- they’ve made purchasing so easy!

Another tip on heard on my podcast today was if you’re tempted by Amazon (or whatever) put an item in your cart - but don’t buy it - make yourself wait a period of time - a day or a couple of days - and see if you still want it as badly. Many times you’ll be able to pass it by.

Amazon knows this trick. They’ll often drop the price a little from the time you put it in your basket and try to reel you in.

Ack…the thrift shop. I volunteer at a charity thrift shop…recipients of my bag a week. But sometimes…there is a deal too good to pass up. Ok…for February, I’ll pass it up!

Not falling for that hat trick! But I do shop that way for clearance items at Nordstrom… sometimes, I luck out at hit the 70% off jackpot. Or of the item sells out, I am not going to cry.

So in the spirit of this thread, I went into my already booked flights to select the actual seats today so that I would not be tempted by flight deals tomorrow. I saw that the rental car reservation that the airline was offering was 1/3 less than the one I had booked through Costco for a larger car with the same rental car company. Booked new reservation and cancelled Costco. Maybe this goes on the Good Buy thread but I feel like I am starting February off with a credit in my column. Trip is not until March so I can spend that credit for the hotel parking on that trip.

Sorry I am not joining. Retail therapy WORKS for me.
When I turn on my computer, slickdeals.net is one of the first pages to load.

Okay. I’m jumping in. There I said it. Now I can’t back out. I’m going to focus on “needs” vs. “wants”. I love to shop, browse, whatever, but there’s really not much I absolutely need…except for that roomba they keep talking about on another thread. Guess it’ll have to wait until March.

Here are a couple of tidbits that I’ve had pasted to my refrigerator in every house we’ve lived in:

I’m certainly not perfect in this regard, but a wise person entered my life years ago who taught me to continually ask the question, “How much is enough?” With that as a guiding principle, I’ve gotten better over the years. Definitely baby steps. Kudos to @deb922 for starting this thread. I’m going to be more mindful this month, too.

Great quotes @ChoatieMom
