Coming back to update that this Costco jacket is actually quite warm, warmer than earlier years’ versions. Caveat, I don’t spend a ton of time outside when it is sub-zero, but with things like standing at the gas pump, I felt quite warm even in some wind (and no hat, no gloves, and just wearing leggings, though obviously those would be wise additions for more lengthy excursions).
I have been wearing wool socks more (with sneakers, even in snow, mostly for in and out of the grocery etc) and I am wondering if this makes me an old lady. Reminds me of my mother. On the upside, I realized that some of my pairs, all of which are gifts from H, are Darn Tough brand, which some of you may have recommended in this thread or elsewhere, and I do think they may be a bit superior to Smartwool, though perhaps it depends on the particular one.
I just bought my 2nd midweight top from Minus33. It’s 100% merino wool and warmer than the thinner baselayer shirts I got from Costco and elsewhere. It got great reviews from wirecutter (NYX).
Also I bought Columbia omniheat vest and jacket & beanie. The liner reflects your body heat so you stay warmer w/o the bulk.
Wool socks, will thermal bottoms and warm walking shoes and I can handle cooler travel weather.
I have several pairs of rechargeable hand warmers. Since the batteries only last about 4 to 5 hours, I always keep a pair charging throughout the winter.
Agree with Columbia brand. It doesn’t sound like you’re going to be playing in the snow on the regular, so I don’t see the need to spend big bucks on brand. Columbia is reasonably priced, IMO and the omni heat line is also lightweight.
Check outlets for good prices on past year’s gear. REI has one and I think Backcountry and Camp saver. Also, Sierra Trading. Many times you can find good mark downs on the major brands.
I like some of Sorel’s stuff, but the really warm, waterproof stuff is also very clunky. I feel like I am wearing moon boots.
