Sports and School Spirit

My impression, as a parent of a Lafayette freshman, is that while the students don’t go overboard with school spirit like you’d see at some of the DI football factories or at Duke for basketball, they do turn out in reasonable numbers for team sports. We came down for a couple football games last fall and there were pretty good crowds for a small college. Lafayette, in fact, did lead the Patriot League in attendance for football in 2008; granted, most attendees were local residents, alums and parents.

As for support for other team sports I can’t say. I went to a Division III LAC for my B.A. and a Division I university for graduate school. From what I have seen so far Lafayette strikes a nice balance between the two in terms of school spirit and the sports scene (the exception being the Lafayette-Lehigh game which mimics the big time with all its sudsy lunacy – but that’s mostly alums).
