Pro: If there are required courses outside of your comfort zone, and not part of your intended major, you can get them out of the way before getting on campus.

Pro: part time internship/job experience in the fall. Not as much for the money, but to help in applying for summer internships the following year (at that level, companies look more for experience than whether they had 1 or 2 quarters of the GE courses).

My DS volunteered for a local congressperson in the fall which set him up for a summer internship the following year. For CS types for example, doing several hackathons in the fall and an independent project will make a great impression on a resume.
