Spring/Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

@nahenry1 Awww! :frowning: So sorry to hear that! I was rooting for you! Keep plugging away and apply again! Would you mind stating transfer GPA?

Anyone else incessantly checking their my status now?!

@britni12 I am since they have already sent out ME decline responses and I am applying for ME :-S

@DaveCloud My hubby applied for Aerospace for 1st, mechanical for 2nd choice, still in review, fingers crossed! He has a 3.75, 6 year military vet. Superb essay E, good statement of purpose. Calc 1 done, and University Physics 1: Mechanics done. 93 hours transferred and 2 associate’s degrees, 2 because his Bussiness associate’s auto gave him a general studies associate degree.

Do they look at your “transfer GPA” or the GPA listed on your transcript for admissions purposes? My “transfer GPA” is lower than my transcript :frowning:

@liberalguy97 Yeah apparently they look at the Transfer GPA. Are your hours listed also less than your actual hours earned?

@liberalguy97 Did UT themselves say that?

http://catalog.utexas.edu/general-information/admission/undergraduate-admission/transfer-admission/

“The admission grade point average (GPA) is computed on all transferable college coursework the student has undertaken, whether passed, failed, or repeated.”

Yep, they said so directly.

@BlueMoonArmy Sweet! Thanks for verifying  I wasn’t being rude, just asking is all

I’m applying for Petroleum Engineering, and I am still in review. Please let me know if anyone gets accepted or declined!

@rivera007 would you mind providing your stats?

I also applied for the fall semester. I’m so nervous right now and I’m wondering if I have a chance of getting into the CS program.

I finished most of my college core curriculum during a dual enrollment program in high school. I applied as a Freshman during high school, but I initially got rejected because of my low ranking.

  • Dual-Enrollment School: South Texas Collage - graduated with a 3.71 GPA. Managed to graduate with a AS in Computer Science.
  • Current School: University of Texas Rio Grande Valley - Currently have a 3.5 GPA this semester. (I hope that drop doesn't hurt too much, i had to take several tougher classes)
  • Transferring to: CS/CNS
  • Essays: I think they are pretty solid, but I can't really judge them. One of them mentioned how I overcame my struggles during the dual enrollment program.
  • Extracurriculars: Secretary of UTRGV Young Dems, Secretary of UTRGV Chinese Culture & Language Association
  • Honors: Deans List, Phi Theta Kappa
  • Letters of rec: One from my Systems Programming professor.

@MauroC I hate to say this, but I’ve heard of 4.0’s being rejected from the CS major within the past couple years. It’s grown to become one of, if not the hardest program to get into at UT and apparently is the #6 CS program worldwide (according to US News & World Report). Do not feel bad if you don’t get into that major.
However, your stats look good to me when thinking about getting into the university as a whole (not that I would know hardly anything, admittedly). What is your second choice major?

I applied for CNS as a CS major. 2nd choice is ECE. This was pretty much last minute (finished in a week) because I originally wanted to transfer in Spring 2017 until they shut that down. Stat breakdown:

  • School: Alamo Colleges
  • Gender: Male
  • Ethnicity: Black
  • Major: Computer Science
  • Hours Counted: 47 (I have 53, but the transcript was updated too late and it doesn't change my GPA)
  • Important Courses: Calculus I - A Calculus II - B Programming Fundamentals I - A
  • GPA: 3.73 (Calculated by UT's degree audit)
  • Essays: Written in 1 day, so I can't say, but I like them. That's all that matters.
  • Extracurricular: None, my work experience is more than enough
  • Work history: 5 years, 7 months on active duty Air Force fixing computers and radars during in-flight operations, currently a drilling member of the Texas Air National Guard and I work IT at my unit. We do cyber related stuff. It's hush-hush.
  • Volunteering: Tutor mathematics about 2 hours per week, some Air Force specific stuff
  • Awards: Lots of military medals, but the two biggest are three Air Medals and one Aerial Achievement. I have no idea if admissions will even know what they mean anyway.
  • Recognition: Dean's List, Phi Theta Kappa
  • Selling Points?: Security+ certified, an active Top Secret Security clearance, combat veteran, I was top 7% of my HS class in Texas (probably doesn't matter anymore), first gen college student, graduate of the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School, attended United States Air Force Academy for a semester
  • Recommendation Letters: Two, one from my programming teacher, one from the Captain who runs flight. No idea how good any of them are. They were pretty last minute.

This application is kind of a crapshoot. I was caught off guard with a lot of it. I’m banking on the military experience and the new changes to the holistic review for veterans starting this semester. Maybe they’ll show some love for a Guardsman? Anyone know if you can file appeals at the end of a semester so that they can re-evaluate you with your now completed in-progress courses?

@BlueMoonArmy I applied for 1st ECE and 2nd CS. I too am a veteran (Navy; 9 years active and currently Reservist for about 1.5 years now; Electronics Technician working on comms, radars, etc.). My audit sheet says 3.63 w/ 71 credits. I currently work at Samsung in the Photolithography Engineering Department as an Equipment Technician. I have a bunch of volunteer stuff and am the Leading Petty Officer of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command detachment out of Austin. I just thought it was kinda neat that we had pretty similar stats. (I too have Security+ and TS, haha). I was accepted to A&M 17 days after I submitted my application, so that’s good at least.

Have you completed Engineering Physics I? If not, you won’t be considered for Cockrell.

@britni12 You completed your scholarship sheet, right? How did you find estimates for all the prices of tuition and all that? You would think the institution would have all that information.

@britni12 I have completed all of my basics. I have completed all of the required mathematics courses (through differential equations.) I have completed both University Physics courses. I have already began my Petroleum Engineering courses as well. I have completed thermodynamics, MATLAB, and I am currently taking Petrophysics, Technical Communications and mechanics (solids). I am at my fourth semester at the University of Houston and have maintained a 3.45 GPA and have 96 transfer hours and also an Entrepreneurship Certificate. Both of my essays are pretty solid as well.

What is the purpose behind the Scholarship application? Is it reviewed to find any scholarships that you are qualified to receive or what? And does it have any impact on your acceptance or admittance into The University of Texas?

@SystemAddict Admissions did say a lot of veterans apply. Texas is a very good state for veterans.

My Physics I is in progress. I could probably put in an appeal after the semester is over with the updated transcript, but I’m not 100% sold on ECE. I had to put something, and it was close enough. It depends on how much I think I would want to go to A&M or not. As of now, I’m leaning against it because it’s far from my unit and I don’t want that “small town” experience. I was stationed in a small town, and it sucked. Had to go too far to do anything.

@SystemAddict Yes, I completed the scholarship application. The tuition for UT Austin is available on their website. I have included the link for you
