Staples sent my laptop to the salvage yard instead of repairing it

I think there are times when companies behave in such a heinous way that you need to take public action. This strikes me as one of those times. I’d contact [The Consumerist: Shoppers Bite Back](http://consumerist.com), post a video on YouTube, etc. Yeah, they gave you money for a new computer, but the fact that they didn’t inform you about sending your laptop to salvage is inexcusable IMHO.

you can get a terrabyte of external hd storage for $300.
Easy to keep to yourself. But ALWAYS back up your data

OMG, they charge $60 to backup your data to a DVD.

What’s wrong with a homemade solution of just making a home made inductor around the hard disk?

Because you’ll never know exactly what effect it has on the magnetization of the disks and how it’d affect every bit that’s written to the disk. You might make the disk unusable from an OS perspective but that doesn’t mean that specialized circuitry couldn’t read areas where the bits are intact even if they’re at lower than ‘normal’ levels. This is true for just passing the disk under a ‘large magnet’ as well. The best way to wipe the disk is to repeatedly write various bit patterns to the same area with a purpose-designed program - or use a hammer.

Note - I’ve designed disk controller boards before.

BCEagle,

Is the seizing of laptops at the border some new trend? I travel ALL the time with my laptop and have taken it to Canada, several European countries, and the Caribbean and no one has ever looked twice at it, or at anyone’s laptop traveling around me. In Europe they don’t even make me take it out of my bag.

You should submit this to consumerist.com

How do I submit to consumerist?

I emailed Staples (having already called them twice). Here is their reply.
