Starting a club as a freshman

My son’s at Michigan for industrial engineering @Mathlover0406. But he applied LSA since he met with both the actuarial science head and the engineering head and was sorta not sure which way to go. He wants to evidently be on the business side but with engineering training /mindset.

We live in Chicago and visited UChicago for their school tour /talk. Amazing school. He is also a math kid. Finished with Mutivariate Calc in senior year. So when on the tour my wife is like let’s call the math department and just see if they can see us. We got lucky and the head of the department said he had time and would love to talk with us.

What a great person. So the question to him from my son was… “what can you do with a math degree”. He lit up. Like a kid in a candy store. He asked my son what he wanted to do. He said “you can do that and basically anything with a math degree”. He told us about recent graduates that worked in just about any sector that you can imagine. It was very enlightening for us.

You can email any school. If this is not a serious target school just pick a local school or one of interest. Go visit if you can… Yes, even now. Especially if it’s very close to you.

Pro warning : at UChicago he had a backboard in his room. He used it to give my son a Calc problem right there and then… He was trying to show my son how they teach. It was basic and he did fine but wasn’t ready to do math problems… Lol…

Also the math heads own son in 8th grade was like in Calc 2… That’s not fair… Lol ?

Calc 2 in 8th grade???

Just stopping by to write that I didn’t respond because the excellent advice that @Knowsstuff, @lookingforward, and @RichInPitt have provided made any addition on my part superfluous.

So good luck, have fun, and take the great advice that has been provided here.

@Mathlover0406. Yes… That’s not even playing fair ?. Guess that’s the advantage when your dad is head of the mathematics department at UChicago ??

I think some people are just born smarter and luckier than the others. I am a first-generation immigrant, so like the 2 ends of the spectrum.

But you’re still only a 9th grader. Don’t let your dreams get inflated. Just having ideas isn’t what will impress colleges. You need to pick the right balance of activities. “Founded” is rarely any tip. It’s the legit results that matter. Only time tells that.

Be a freshman. Get more grades, take rigorous courses, get your own true SAT or ACT scores, not just the PSAT. Grow. Learn what colleges like. (Doesnt seem you even have a vague idea of what colleges. That takes time and a record.)

Without having done much yet, you can’t have much perspective. Work on it.
