State Department Summer Clerical Program 2012

@hellUVAchance

Yeah, I’m definitely wishing that I had some family at the State Department.

@ goodnoodle Whoa there… I didn’t realize that there are internet forum standards of etiquette. Please excuse my insolence kind sir!

I think goodnoodle was referring to him/herself, not you, dear LeCorbusier.

Are there any State jobs/internships that AREN’T in DC? Preferably West Coast.
I thought they had something at regional offices but I’m not sure…

They don’t provide housing, although when you receive your acceptance package in the mail, it will contain a sheet listing closeby housing options. I advise subletting bc it can get really expensive (sublets can too but I’ve found that they are somewhat cheaper, but not all).

I’m not sure if they have a west coast office but I do know that they have international posts but I’m almost positive the Clerical Program is only in DC.

You don’t have to live in DC to do this.

Lastly, I did intern before working in the DoS, but only as a high school student. But most if those whom I did meet said that the DoS was their first internship.

In my opinion, getting a job/internship in DC is mostly about whom you know.

Application statuses are beginning to change. If you guys wouldn’t mind, could you update your status here when it changes so that we can keep speculate intelligently on what different status changes at different points in time mean?

I’m aware that the change doesn’t mean much now, but my current status is “Application Referred for Additional Consideration.” Last year (rejected), my status stayed static for a long while at “Referred to Hiring Official for Consideration,” so I’m guessing if your status changes any further, it’s a good sign.

Good luck to you all!

I got an email this morning saying my application is “Eligible - referred to next step in selection process”. So I’m a step behind you, pokm12?

I got the eligible email this morning as well. I want this job a lot!

Sent from my SPH-M920 using CC App

nope-- I’m on the same step as you guys. The other status I posted was my ultimate one from last year. I was rejected last year.

Does anyone know when we’ll get final notifications?

Edit:

Found the answer to my question from a State Dept employee on their message board:

[Application Status Change - U.S. Department of State](http://careers.state.gov/engage/forums/student-programs/application-status-change#idvBMjH9bT_7iDY2oRM3rjtg)

last year they said something similar, but we didn’t get notified until 4/27. Don’t hold your breath for these guys. But maybe they’ve since realized the amount of time it takes to select candidates and possible hold-ups during this process and have changed the process up a little so decisions will be out on time. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

As far as housing and costs . . .

Most of the interns I’ve talked to do one of the following:

Live nearby anyway and so live at home

Live with a friend or relative

Share an apartment (which the parents pay for) with several roommates

Didn’t the Congressional budget showdown occur around April of last year? Maybe the uncertainty over funding caused notifications to be pushed back so far.

does anyone else’s application say Application Referred for Additional Consideration.?

^That’s what mine says.

i live in northern virginia, close to the dc area so traveling/dorming wouldn’t be a problem for me. got accepted to george mason university and hoping to work here during the summer after high school.
my dad use to work for the state department and got my sister in the program and they called her back for the next summer. now both of them don’t work here… i applied but i have a feeling i won’t have a shot because i have no connections… -_- this blows

and my application status says “Eligible – Referred to Next Step in Selection Process”

Has anyone heard anything? Do you guys think we’ll really get results by the end of February?

I haven’t heard anything but last night at like 2 am i went to check my app status and it had a site error of site under maintenance so hopefully this means they were doing some updating my status says application referred for additional consideration does any one have anything else?

I applied and have the “Eligible – Referred to Next Step in Selection Process” status. Like some of you, I live in the DC area so I would be commuting. I am a little worried about not having connections in the department. Is it really that big of a deal? for those of you who have actually been in the program, was it worth it? I have heard that it looks great on your college apps and I would love to get in regardless. how much of the summer did you work?

Topic posted on State’s student programs forum says notifications will “likely be sent out in early March.” ugh.
