State flag ship universities

wow
isn’t OSU or U of O in the T-100 ?

If you mean Oregon St., and U of Oregon, or even U of Oklahoma or Oklahoma St, the answer in both cases is … No. Most of the Flagships not in the top 100 are in the next 50…

last year’s US News ranking had OU (Univ of Okla) at 108 I believe (same as Univ of Oregon). OSA (Okla State) and Oregon State were third tier.

Keep in mind, however, that although OU (Univ of Oklahoma) was 108 overall nationally, regionally it is VERY well respected - especially in engineering and geology. Same with LSU.

University of Delaware is #71

UMass-Amherst just missed by 2 (#102)

“If you mean Oregon St., and U of Oregon, or even U of Oklahoma or Oklahoma St, the answer in both cases is … No. Most of the Flagships not in the top 100 are in the next 50…”

sorry, I was talking about Univ of Oregon and Oregon State U

The problem with the third tier is that after the rank of 110 or 120 or whatever they just stop ranking, so you don’t know what 121 is or which ones are closer to 200.

Also the underlying problem with the USNWR rankings is that the school you mention, OU, has been known in the past to fudge the data they give USNWR a little bit. In fact almost every school in the 2nd Tier has fudged their data a little bit. USC, Clemson, OU, and the list goes on and on, with schools that got caught lying about their data.

OSU doesn’t even provide all of the data that USNWR asks for. OSU’s mentality is to hell with that. OSU is the larger of the two main flagships and overall is a slightly better undergraduate school. But you’re right, OU is also pretty well-respected. Mostly for football however. A lot of the hicks who are diehard OU fans don’t even realize it’s a school.

USC fakes data… wow

osucowboys - I agree that there are LOTS Of problems with the USNews rankings.

amby262roy – fudge is probably a better word! I believe that topic is a sticky on the USC board… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/727030-ranking-rigging-usc.html

To summarize, USC counted non “full-time, tenure track faculty members” as though they were. in order to boost the National Academy of Sciences count for USC.

USC also does not participate in the Common Data Set initiative, which makes me suspicious of their admissions data.

@DunninLA : thank you sir/ma’am for correcting me on my diction
and wow i held USC to a high regard but now…

Cal is the California flagship, not UCLA. That’s why it’s usually called “Cal”, because it was the first University of California.
