State Schools that are Cheap

Are you lower income with few resources for college, or are your parents relatively well off (150-180K+) but can’t afford their EFC?

SUNY Geneseo may be “cheap,” but it’s pretty highly rated for liberal arts, appearing on a lot of lists of top public LACs.

Really? We live in a neighboring state. Many students are very happy to attend Stony Brook, or Bing, or Geneseo…or Buffalo…because of the programs offered, and the modest cost for OOS students.

Not wishing to get in a debate (which is against the terms of service anyway) but there are plenty of folks who find the SUNY schools to be quite good.

One of my kids is in state at a SUNY. She is receiving a great education and will be attending an amazing graduate program starting this summer. When she interviewed for grad school, the professor who interviewed her took one look at her resume and told her that she was quite impressed with what she accomplished during her four years at SUNY.

My daughter’s adviser recently told her that she gets phone calls all the time from OOS graduate programs telling her how well prepared their students are.

Yes there are many great students at SUNYs. That is certainly the case. When I said you get what you pay for I was not referring to the quality of the students. There are obviously some outstanding students at many or even all SUNYS.

Lostaccount I understand how you feel about some ( or all) of the SUNY schools. As a matter of fact, my younger kid is not attending one for many of the reasons which have been discussed on previous threads. SUNY was not the right school for her, but for my older kid it was really a good fit and she thrived.

@Lostaccount, We all know you don’t like the SUNY schools. Why do you feel it’s necessary to make a derogatory comment every time they’re mentioned? You remind me of a certain 18-year-old who bashes a particular school as often as he can because they rejected him. Neither are helpful and I wish you both would give it a rest.

If you are low income, there are many PRIVATE schools that give generous FA, to make them competitive in cost w in-state public.

Public is not always cheaper, especially OOS public.
