Essay Prompt: Do we need other people to understand ourselves?

Man has been described as a social animal. that simply means that man is designed to live and co - exist with othrs of his type. Certainly, then, in order to fully understand himself, man has to interact with others. This fact is clearly demonstrated in the area’s of familiy life and school life.

In my family,I am the lastborn of five. My sibling have played a monumental role in my development. Playing with them, talking to them, working with them, all these have required that I display personal characteristeics like trust, cooperation, obedience. I recall vividly a say I was enjoying a game of soccer with my brothers. As the game went on, my brother being my senior, sed his greater weight to push me in order to gain an advantage. I felet really bad. When I think of it now, it is clear to me that the experience was enlightening, I got to learn that it was unpleasant to be pushed. At that moment, I got a better understanding of myself. If I had not had that interaction with my brother, I would not have understood that about myself.

At school,I meet a lot of people, from teachers to students to other workers. From the teachers, I get to learn how I originated. I am also taught what constitutes proper behaviour. When I do wrong, I get punished for it. Students talk to me and I talk to them. We enjoy class discussions. Different personalities with varied traits are observed by me. From my observations, I see what makes them sad and what makes them glad. I learn from them. I see countless similarities abetween my opinions and theirs. The differences are also obvious as well. The entire schooling experience helps me get to know myself better - know what I like and what I don’t like.

These associations help me to from my character. I also learn how to dal with others. From their reactions to my actions Ilearn how to behave acceptably.

It cannot be denied that for man to fully grasp himself, he needs the association and interaction of others. As Anne Shpard said understanding ourselves and understanding others are connected. Without the prescence of others, we would have no experiences and no memories. We would be blank as to who we really are. We need other to help us truly understand ourselves.
