If the secret truth has something to do with admissions, perhaps it’s secret either because it would harm innocent third parties (i.e., students who are enrolled but should not have been admitted) or would subject the university to potential liability (i.e., students who should have been admitted but weren’t).

THAT’s where else her name is familiar from. My son had to study one of her books last year.

…some entertainment in Chinese proverbs while we patiently await the truth…

on the general situation…
“Force tells weak from strong for a moment; truth tells right from wrong all the time.”

on Stetson’s possible downfall…
“Small ills are the fountains of most of our groans. Men trip not on mountains, they stumble on stones.”

on our rumor mongering…
“Flies never visit an egg that has no crack.”

on our belief…
“Paper can’t wrap up a fire.”

on our desire to know…
“If the wind comes from an empty cave, it’s not without a reason.”

on our hope by being persistently inquisitive…
“Dripping water can eat through a stone.”
“The more you try to cover things up, the more exposed they will be.”

on Gutmann’s hope…
“Three feet of ice will not result from one day of freezing weather.”

speculating on Gutmann’s fears…
“When the tree falls, the monkeys scatter.”
“An ant may well destroy an entire dam.”
“A mantis stalking a cicada is unaware of an oriole behind.”
“One thing well done is a hundred done; one thing that fails dooms the rest.”

but we could be wrong about all of this…
“A person cannot be judged by his appearance in the same token as the sea cannot be measured with a bucket.”

and perhaps we should cut some slack…
“Making a thousand decisions, even the wise will make a mistake.”

…but Penn is still a great school…
“A speck on a jade stone won’t obscure its radiance.”

Hey Daddy Clucker … those are really great! Thanks for sharing. I concur with your conclusion, as well. Won’t mean a hill of beans in the long run, but this situation may have the potential to ruin or severely strain some careers and egoes (sp?).

This situation of valuing openness, “except in this case” seems kinda like the woman who is profoundly pro-life, until she finds herself in the precarious position of being pregnant (the condom broke, my pills failed, I was attacked, my tubal failed, my husband had a vas…)

yes, sunny, it is easy to take the high ground when it is not your hide that is on the line. I try to remember that on days when I am feeling smug or sanctimonious. I do feel for Amy Gutmann if she is in a situation, not of her own making, that puts the institution at risk of embarrassment. But then, that comes with the territory.

I am a huge fan of Penn. I think they offer something a little different from the other Ivies. People talk about Wharton, but their program for nursing is second to none. I will say, however, I have been a little skeptical of the jumps they have made in their matriculation rates. I know they have relied heavily on ED, but based on some students who have been placed on a waitlist, I have wondered if they manipulate that as well so they don’t offer admission to superbly qualified candidates who may turn them down.

I know schools are under pressure to improve performance in certain categories, so it would be easy for an ambitious individual to go from making the system work to your advantage to manipulating the system in a manner that borders on unethical.

sunny … dumb illustration. keep this for another forum, please.

Pres. Guttmann has moved from the world of theory to practice, faculty to administrator.

Also, a university administration is not a “deliberative democracy”.

Also, even in a governmental setting, there are situations where openness and transparency may yield to other values. Governments are only selectively open and transparent about military and diplomatic intentions – i.e., when it suits them to be. And there may well be situations where an employee’s privacy interests, and the need to resolve a problem quickly and efficiently, require discretion rather than disclosure.

Thanks, Papa Chicken.

…running out of hard evidence and interviews to report…

…our role…

conclusion

I suspect with the exhaustion of sources to report that it will now be harder to keep this story in the news…probably what Gutmann is waiting for. Only hope (for the truth to come out) then is to have a stool-pigeon come forward.

Poster Iknewpenn–where are you?

Obviously, it is NOT in the University’s best interests to tell the truth…

So much for at least one view of Penn as a bastion of truth and transparency. As one other said, “truth takes time.”

Truth will out. Ms. Gutman will not be able to dig a hole sufficiently deep to bury this elephant in her pantry.

any new thoughts on this?

all’s still quiet on the eastern front…I check the news every morning & its been remarkably quiet on the Stetson speculation for over 2 weeks…give it another week or 2 of silence & I’d bet this story will be deep-sixed for the foreseeable future. …then, Gutmann 1 vs transparency 0.

Amazing that Penn can get away with hiding whatever the truth may be.

Amazing!!! I am thinking a few more people knew about the details besides just Deep Throat, Woodward and Bernstein.

Not so amazing. Cornell still hasn’t explained why they forced out their president back in 2005 after only two years on the job.

A president is a bit more important than an admissions director.

When universities want to keep their mouths shut, they seem to be pretty good at it.

What is really curious is why Penn hasn’t released their ED application numbers yet…could they possibly have dropped?

this was put an editorial context of not-so-good things that transpired this semester at Penn…no new information.

I’m afraid the Stetson truth has been successfully deep sixed.
