Stetson resigns (suddenly) from Penn admissions

Well that’s why I’m thinking deathbed confession. If it isn’t out by now-- Stetson is not Brad Pitt–thank god-- but really.

The sad reality is that Penn could --and should – have avoided this entire circus with a simple press release. In comparison, the “scandal” in the admission office at MIT was short-lived. Not everyone might have agreed with the swift decisions by MIT regarding a long term employee, but few could blame the school for attempting to bury the bad news. In this case, for all we know, there isn’t any!

bethievt–please explain the Brad Pitt reference…

Papparazzi are following Brad Pitt’s every movement. We are the only people on the planet who even know Stetson’s name. You do the math.

sigh…ya know, I just hate not knowing stuff like this. I guess my mother was right- I’m nosy.

This is telling…if A LOT more girls were accepted before…See, this is what we are reduced to doing because they won’t dispense information!

Bethievt–I wouldn’t want to Brad-Pitt-famous for anything in the world.

yep–necessity is the mother of invention!!

To all the Stetson followers on this thread, finally some news!

I just noticed a thread started by audiophile ( http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/499473-stetson-starting-his-own-consulting-company.html</a> ) that broke the news on CC first. Source, our favorite Daily Pennsylvanian a few days back on 4/25:
[Stetson starting consulting company - News](http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2008/04/25/News/Stetson.Starting.Consulting.Company-3349564.shtml)

Of course, still no word on what got him fired in the first place.

fyi, from the referenced Harvard Summer Institute web page ( [Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions, June 22-27, 2008 Faculty, Staff, and Guests](http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~sica/bios.htm#stetson) )

His first hire will be Marilee Jones. :D

These are the "popular’ rumors for those who are not aware of them. I heard the first one below from some sources at the U. But it was stated as a rumor.

The Rumors: Dedicated to the Ladies in the House
The most popular rumor on Penn’s campus (and our comment boards) is that Stetson engaged in some hanky panky with a young, but not too young, girl. Although this girl is estimated to be in her late teens or early twenties, it’s unclear whether she attends Penn. Tipsters and rumormongerers have been crowding around this explanation, with each offering a different sexified denouement. One source claims that Stetson bumped up his resignation after the girl’s parents threatened to contact the Inquirer (ouch… you guys almost had it!) Another heard that the parents were preparing a lawsuit against Stetson for something. Must have been some kinky sex.

The next rumor follows a more traditional political corruption narrative, and an especially traditional one for admissions officers: that he let in ****ty applicants for personal reasons. Family friends and the like. Well, it’s not sex, but it could be more devastating if true. No one ultimately cares if the guy just got his junk knocked around, but when he abuses his position the University has more to answer for. Although maybe he got his junk knocked around so that he would abuse power. Niccce.

The last rumor says that he ran off for poor health reasons. Hopefully that’s not the case; we all want the ol’ bugaroo to be healthy. And once he’s healthy, we want to destroy his legacy with scandals

hikids,
Forgive my lack of understanding, but why do you want to destroy Stetson’s legacy? I was under the impression that a lot of good things happened on his watch and that U Penn’s competitiveness and profile is measurably improved as a result of his work with the admissions group. Do I have it wrong?

hakette, I am not trying to do anything of the sort. I failed to put the thing in quotes. It is from the following article place in another thread which is below. It is the author of the article that makes the last statement about legacy and scandals.

[Rumors Swirl About Penn Ex-Admissions Dean - IvyGate: The Ivy League blog. News, gossip, sex, sports and more at Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale](http://www.ivygateblog.com/blog/2007/09/rumors_swirl_about_expenn_admissions_dean_admissions_office_hides.html)

sorry, no harm intended-I was just asking a question and trying to understand better

wasn’t he pretty well regarded and don’t most U Penn/Ivy folks think he did a pretty great job while there?

He was very highly regarded and did an excellent job. (he had the wisdom to admit MY son, didn’t he? ) I think the real issue is that Penn was so secretive about his departure that it led to all sorts of speculation.

Well that was a particularly sleazy article based on nothing.

It turns the resignation was based on something substantial from what some Penn faculty have told me to. It is to the point they seem really have turned against him. Before you ask, they have not said what it is. So it seems to be a situation where someone was on a roll doing great stuff, then did something not so smart which ended it.

It does not matter … anymore. Penn lost its chance to do the right thing many months ago. The wild speculation caused a lot more damage than the truth might have.

However, in a way, considering their mutual aversion for truthful and timely disclosures, it was appropriate for Penn and Stetson.

/Yawn!
