@jonri, I already posted the link to the age of consent for each state. The table also shows the min age difference between the couple. Some states specify an age difference, for other states the age difference is irrelevant.

“If a 16 y.o. and 15 y.o. boyfriend/girlfriend are caught having sex w mutual consent, the 16 y.o. can be charged w statutory rape and have a sex-offender albatross around the neck for the rest of his/her life”

In Georgia they have the ROMEO AND JULIET PROVISION
• The Romeo and Juliet Provision does not make
underage sexual activity “legal” but rather lowers the
charge from a felony to a misdemeanor. A misdemeanor
can still carry jail time, probation, or a fine. For
example, if one of the partners is at least 14 but less
than 16, and the other person is 18 or younger, then
the Romeo and Juliette provision may apply.
• In the “real world”, a person under 18 is not likely to
be charged with a crime for kissing or fooling around
with his or her 15-year-old girlfriend or boyfriend.
However, the younger one of the participants is and
the greater the age difference between the younger
and the older person, the more likely it is that
someone may consider the contact to deserve
criminal prosecution

I got the above off the Georgia Children and families website. If they are convicted using the Romeo and Juliet Provision then they are not required to register as a sex offender. There are other states with similar laws.

Also the Georgia sex offender registry has a picture of the person, their address, Birth date, date of conviction ,conviction state and crime. It is easy to figure out at what age the person was convicted. I would think that other states show similar information on their registry.

The nature of law is they set a line that may or may not be fair in a specific case but which society believes is fair when applied generally. We long ago decided to be a “nation of laws”, with the understanding that sometimes the law doesn’t fit. There are and have been many examples where that tension has worked itself out.

I type this after watching To Kill A Mockingbird’s end last night for the umpteenth time. That was a system, during my lifetime, where the social law of white rule was applied both through mob action and the complicity of the legal structure with the express purpose of oppression. But whether this or that person really belongs on an offender list is not like that.

One can find examples of bad fit all over, like a kid who gets 100 years for possession of a burnt pot roach. Or the person sent to prison for life w/o parole as a 3x offender for 3 minor charges accrued over a number of years. Some bother you and some don’t. That’s the nature of life.

I read a long article in the paper yesterday about the love of 2 people and how it was unaffected by her (their?) injury in the Marathon bombing. Nice story. No one pays any attention to the large numbers of people injured every day. No one sends them money. Their stories will not be written up. They won’t be interviewed on TV. They won’t get to throw out the first pitch or carry the flag at a football game. That’s the way life works.

Wow.

That’s jaw-dropping

I wonder who was talking? Summer, Psycho Serena or Taquanda?

[Serena Williams: The Great One | Culture News | Rolling Stone](<a href=“Serena Williams: The Great One”>Serena Williams: The Great One)

Whenever you hear “I’m not blaming the victim, but…”, it’s usually followed by blaming the victim.

The girl was stupid to get drunk, but she no more “deserves” to be raped than someone who stupidly leaves the back door of their house open “deserves” to be robbed

If only Serena posted on this CC thread, we’d have turned her right around. ;)

Guessing that Serena’s PR machine will have job security for a bit. Sheesh. She really said that? But hey, I guess she has someone to blame those idiotic comments on…

Sports celebrities are NOT famous for their insights–off the field or court. Sadly. Thankfully, she is not in a position of moral authority. Sheesh.

Is Serena saying she was misquoted?

I’m so old, I only remember when women in tennis had nice things to say to one another (Martina and Chris) and the men were doing all the trash talking/finger gestures (Jimmy, Ilie, John).

I’m glad Serena apologized, but those pesky tape recorders capture all those tricky words that just come out of our mouths when we’re not thinking about it, don’t they?

Our son graduated from Steubenville High School one year before this crime was committed. We live in a nearby town. Son transferred to SHS in high school because they offer the best education in our area. There are no regrets about that decision. He was a band member and in the scholars program. He barely knew any of the football players when he went to school there. He did not know the two freshman who committed the crime.

He attends a college an hour away in a large city. He is in a work study program at the college as a computer tech. There is a man who works in that department and lives in our town. The man found out our son graduated from Steubenville and would barely talk to him after that.

Several months later, my son and another work study student were walking through the hall together. The man from our area saw them and said ‘hi’ to the other student. He looked at my son and all he said was, ‘rapist’.

I ask you: why? Why does a grown man project hatred toward and discriminate against a college student because of his high school alumni?

Your son should speak to the man directly regarding this incident. If the man does not react appropriately, or does it again, your son should complain to someone in authority. Calling someone a “rapist” is not something to be taken lightly. This man is seriously out of line, and should not be behaving this way in the workplace. And this is a workplace, like any other.

BTW, there was a very interesting article about the Steubenville case in a recent New Yorker, which included some information i had not seen elsewhere and cast some aspects of the case in a different light.

I haven’t seen this posted on CC. An adult has now been indicted in connection with an alleged cover up of the rape. He is the director of technology at Steubenville H.S.

“The indictment alleges Rhinamen’s obstruction of justice continued through this week”

Also he allegedly deleted evidence and lied to the grand jury.

The night of the rapes? Boy, they were moving quickly to cover this up.

Here’s the actual indictment. Remember, he’s entitled to the presumption that he is innocent.
