Still out here waiting for the Appointment...

Well…

I had several, and from some pretty potent people (Rudy Giuliani, George Steinbrenner, and a few others). Did they help? I honestly don’t know, but they obviously didn’t hurt as I was sent to NAPS (a perfectly reasonable result considering my lousy first two years in HS).

My opinion is that unless someone who KNOWS can PROVE that such letters can actually HURT you, then there is nothing to lose by sending them in.

That said, a few warnings…

No one appreciates a “canned” recommendation letter. Make sure that whoever is writing you one knows you well and expresses that in their letter. It’s got to come across as completely sincere and well-meant (as opposed to just being sent to secure a vote, for instance), or it very well MAY hurt you.

Also, make sure that the person writing it has either a) some serious position which by its nature gives them credibility to judge character, or b) is writing from the viewpoint of close PROFESSIONAL association with you. Teachers, community leaders, job bosses, etc., weigh far better than Uncle Joe who just happens to be former Navy.

This is advice based on my experiences back when I went through. I strongly recommend that if they do not post here on their own, that you actively seek out our resident BGO’s and ask them directly.

Best of luck. :)
