Stony Brook or Ohio State for Biology/Pre-dental

I agree, this forum has provided me with a lot of useful insight but its so hard to determine what’s “better”. However, these are the considerations I am going to keep in mind when I visit these schools. I will update here with my decision. Thanks.

Do you have other acceptances?

Oh, if you are visiting both, you’ll know - either one stands out or both aren’t right.

But this is the best way.

When is your visits?

Good luck.

PS - you might want to meet with the dept you plan to study (bio) and a pre-med advisor - usually admissions can assist you in setting it up.

Most likely in mid Feb, I plan to visit these schools.

You will probably have a better idea once you visit, walk the campus, talk to people, ask questions etc.

I have not seen Ohio State but am somewhat familiar with Stony Brook. Stony Brook is probably quieter which is something you may like (not sure about the weekends). It is not a big “rah rah” school like Ohio State. I think Stony Brook has a strong science feel to it. That doesn’t mean Ohio State does not- I have never been there.

My advice for large classes is to get there early and sit front and center. You should also attend all office hours. This is exactly what my daughter did at her large school and she is still very close with her professors today (she graduated).

Good luck!

I’m familiar with tOSU. Yes, it’s a large school. But it’s like every other large place. You won’t know every single person there. You will have a cohort in your major at some point, and the people in your dorm, etc. Your circle of friends will be way smaller than the size of the college.

I would strongly suggest you view both colleges with an open mind. Look and see what else is offered beside the academics. The academics will be fine at both colleges. So…look at the locations, and what they have to offer beside college. You need to live there for four years so that metric is an important one.

If you are interested in pursuing honors keep in mind that it is possible to join Honors at Ohio State later even if you were not initially accepted or didn’t apply.
