Storage area discussion…costs and anything related to storage places

No storage unit here, but an 1800 sq ft basement filled to the gills with my H’s “stuff” I am a minimalist, and he is not. Our compromise is that his crap, er…collections…must not infiltrate the living spaces in the house. So, the basement is full, and the garage is a disaster (we’ve never had room to park a car in there), and the attic is where I store seasonal things (outdoor couch cushions, holiday decorations, beach chairs), but the rest of the house is nice and tidy.

I’m not sure what we’ll do when my parents pass away and leave me with a very large house FULL of stuff to deal with.

Don’t bring it to your house! Get a couple of meaningful things and then hire an estate outfit to clear out the rest. Otherwise you will be either getting a storage unit for things no one wants…or cramming it into your house and garage.

That is the BEST way to avoid dragging yourself into a lengthy and unpleasant process. We hired someone who was an expert in these situations who would help you go through things and figure out what was important to you to keep. She then worked with a mover to get it to you, an estate sale outfit for things of value and a junk removal outfit to get rid of the rest. It was the best use of money possible.

Just had our first experience ever with storage… DD with friends rented storage unit for summer. Rat made holes in a rug,
a backpack, and a fabric drawer storage unit. It was insured so we will see will they get any compensation… Next summer all will get in only in plastic bins…
