Streaming Platforms and Pricing

We also have spectrum which covers most of the streaming services. We do have Amazon Prime, we’ve found quite a bit to watch and of course football.

It’s a splurge and spend quite a bit but we watch a lot of sports and spectrum is easy.

I looked through my t mobile bill, found that I was also paying for Apple TV. Do not remember signing up or watching. Dropped that.

For those of you who subscribe to traditional cable TV and pay $100 or more a month, have you considered streaming TV services like YouTube TV? They typically cost much less.

Sure, I’d love to do that. H is a “nope” though. We actually have our sons YouTube TV in hopes that H could learn it. He does not embrace tech and gets really frustrated with learning /using . So we pay almost $200/month for cable and internet

We pay way too much for cable. However, my H’s head would explode if he had to deal with streaming, instead. When we go to Airbnb’s, they typically have streaming tvs. He cannot stand them. Frankly, H’s sanity is worth paying for cable (seriously). We do have Prime, Peacock (free with cable), and Disney+/Hulu (the cheapest option through Verizon). It’s not a small budget item, but it’s worth it for my H.

Our husbands sound the same! And his sanity also means MY sanity!

We were paying Spectrum $255/month for internet, cable TV, and home phone (we use in our home office) and Verizon $364/month for cell service (three phones and and an iPad).

We thought that was ridiculous, so I looked into other options. When I called Spectrum to say we were thinking of switching, they said they could give us cell for $138/month and everything else for an additional $215/month. We just have to call back once a year to ask for the reduced rate.

Included streaming platforms are AMC, Fox One, Peacock, Paramount+, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and Tennis. We pay separately for Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Is it cheaper to switch to a streaming service?

One of my kids did and found out that it really isn’t cheaper.

$100 for internet, which I have to pay for in any case.

$83 for YouTube tv, then there are add ons for 4K, any streaming services that you want?

I’m sure you get used to how to use the app but I already know how to use cable.

It’s still expensive, not as expensive as spectrum but also more complicated. I’m sure that’s what spectrum bets on.

It’s cheaper for my kid who doesn’t watch sports. For the other, the sports are what puts everything into play

Add mine in there. We pay a ridiculous amount for Xfinity/Comcast cable/internet plus streaming. We only watch an hour, occasionally two hours of TV a night. We have 1 TV. Well, technically there’s one in our bedroom, but that hasn’t been on since the Walking Dead first started and younger S was too little to watch, so we watched football instead.

But, if H wants to watch something, it had better be available on something we have. And while it intrigues me to do the start/cancel/wait for a good deal type thing… I LOATHE signing up and into things. I just want to turn the TV on and it work. And goodness knows H won’t do it. He won’t even use the remote most of the time. He throws it at me.

But our Verizon phones are only $118 a month for 4 lines! Unlimited everything. I like the sound of stuff being included with the TMobile plan, but service for that in my area is terrible.

Wow, how did you get that Verizon price? Ours was more than three times that, for three phones and an iPad. I had asked them for the best price they could give us.

We cut the cord on AT&T Uverse a couple of months ago. We considered going streaming instead because I want live TV. We ended up going with an antenna and Tablo for recording. We saved enough in one month to cover the costs.

We do have Netflix in addition. I am also considering adding Walmart/Sam’s Plus which now comes with Peacock or Paramount.

Absolutely! That’s part of the reason that a few years ago I started tracking all the subscriptions (though the list is handy). But TV is more husband’s hobby, and he handles all the technical logistics. He has analyzed it and concluded that he wants to keep Comcast/Infinity. He has been cooperative about visiting the Infinitey store to get the rate reduced after it creeps up… we are due to go again). If money were tighter, I’d push harder.

I have no idea. We’ve been with them since 2015. We get 20% or so through my employer. But it was still around $160/month for a long time. Then some time last year it dropped to $118. I have no idea why. We weren’t paying on any phones previously.

We also all got new iPhones for “free” a couple of years ago. Free meaning they reimburse us monthly for 36 months. I don’t plan on switching as they have the best coverage by us.

I’m trying to see if my plan has a name. It’s $90/month. I get $40/off for auto billing. And then each line for some reason says it’s $7.50 off. And then mine is $5 more a month than the others. They make it so confusing

Edit - plan name is unlimited welcome

Supposedly Spectrum uses the same towers as Verizon, but the service doesn’t seem quite as good.

It definitely was for us.

We used to pay over $200 for Optimum Internet service plus cable. The price invariably jumped significantly each year, usually getting to the upper $200s. I was really tired of calling them every year, threatening to leave and asking for discounts.

Then we got an offer from Verizon Fios for 100 Mbps internet service for $24.99 for life. No renegotiating each year, and 100 Mbps is plenty for my wife and me.

We subscribe to YouTube TV, which costs $82.99, but there are cheaper bundles available. We watch very little TV outside of football season, so we might even pause our subscription for half the year.

In short, our monthly cost was cut in half.

Probably 6-7 years ago we switched from cable to Utube tv. Had been paying $230/mo for cable and internet. When we switched, utube tv was $73 + $75/Att internet, now we are at $83/85. We watch a lot of sports- utube covers everything I need- B1G 10 channel, golf, tennis, etc. Don’t miss cable at all- don’t see any difference. Netflix/Prime and have purchased other streaming services like HBO/Hulu/Apple TV when on a special.

I’d love to switch cell plan to T-Mobile for the streaming benefits but coverage not good here.

When we stopped paying for cable 6.5 years ago the price for cable and internet at the time was $230 per month. We now pay $80/month with Spectrum for our internet. All of our streaming services only add another $50 per month so we are paying $100 less per month than we paid 6.5 years ago.

When I started out with Hulu Live a few years ago, it was like $50 per month. It has doubled since then. I know inflation is still up a bit since Covid, but that increase is waaaaay ahead of inflation.

Although I feel like more and more is getting pushed to the Big10+ channel, like many Nebraska volleyball games and…big10+ is extra $. I haven’t ponied up for that yet.

I am paying $18 for my internet service and $82.99 for youtube, but I get $25 rebate from Amex. I also used to pay over $200 for internet/phone/TV. I no longer have bulky Tivo boxes at home, which used to run out of space. With Youtube TV I could record as much as I want. I pay for Youtube premium because I watch a lot of Aisan Tvs. I share D2’s netflix acct. My mother living half a block from me is able to use my Youtube TV acct.

For those of you who’d like to switch to TMobile but are concerned about the coverage: if you haven’t investigated for awhile, you might check again. The coverage improved drastically when they merged with Sprint, and after they added a bunch of new 5G towers. They have plans that include satellite service if no tower connection is available.

RE: Cable. YoutubeTV is only a few $ less than Comcast cable. That said, I would pay any amount of money to never be a Comcast customer again.

Streaming pro tip: we take our Roku stick with us when we travel, so all our regular streaming is available and we don’t have to log into any accounts on the AirBnb or hotel tv.
