Struggled first semester, am I doomed for transferring?

Hello all,

I just finished my first semester in college and while college is great, I’m not happy with the college I am attending for various reasons. Compared to what I’m used to, I did pretty bad this semester, and I’m looking at probably a 2.7/4.0 this semester. Obviously I made some mistakes, and I think I can do much better next semester, and I’m hoping for at least a 3.5 for the spring.

I’m looking to transfer to a different school for fall '25, and their acceptance rate is pretty high (88%) but I am still worried if this first semester has ruined my chances.

All you can do is try, but you also need to understand that most of your high school record will be reviewed.

This could be a good thing because they will note your good grades in HS. Plus you’ve only been at your school for a year, so they’ll know that it takes freshmen some adjustment to acclimate to a tough college environment.

Apply, you don’t know until you try.

Which school do you have in mind? I got into CSUDH with a GPA of 2.8 but to be guaranteed transfer into the UC system you need a GPA of at least 3.4

Is this the acceptance rate for first year students or for transfer students ?

Typically, a school with an acceptance rate of 88% would experience substantial attrition (drop-outs) of students prior to the second year of college so your chances should be good–especially if you get to a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Have you done an introspective review about why you’ve struggled? Seems like that’s a good investment of your time before you shift into transfer mode.

Like the poet said-- “Wherever you go, there you are”. (attributed to various greats over the years, but I’m pretty sure Yogi Berra said it first).
