Student Credit Card from 1st Financial Bank (USA)

You can get cards without $1.50 monthly or $9 to pay on-line fees. Why go with these bloodsuckers? I had an AMEX in college.

I don’t think a full time college student can get any traditional credit card these days (unless perhaps through a credit union, which we have no affiliation with). I’d love to get one for my daughter, to start her on building a credit record and for use in an emergency, but I’m coming up empty handed. If anyone has any ideas, I’d love to hear them.

crescent, isn’t it funny how many newlyminted posters jumped on this thread to sing praise to this credit card?

There are still zillions of student cards out there from big name banks, most of whom are now more desperate than ever for new signups.

I never really wanted a credit card and just used my debit card most of college.
Then I realized that debit cards are an expensive way to spend your own money.

Given that most places that accept credit cards have to pay anywhere between 3-5% in transaction fees to the credit card company (and most places don’t give cash discount anymore) retailers simply pass on that 3-5% into the price of the item/service.

Unless you have a card that gives decent “rewards” or “cashback”, or the place gives a cash discount, you are simply paying that full fee in order to potentially use a credit card (even if you pay cash!). Even a net 1% back can add up.

She could have done a better job acting, Bunsen.

^^Yup, could have, should have, but did not :)

Did anybody receive a notification that they are adding an annual fee for the credit card. My daughter has this card for a yaer and a half now.

I am currently a College student myself and received an offer from 1fbusa when i turned 18. I am now almost 21 years old and yet to see any of the fees described below.
I opened the card to establish credit, and used it only for gas purchases 2 times a month (to ensure staying below $250 line of credit). Within the last 2 1/2 years my limit has been increased 3 times. (i have had to call to reduce it). Because i am employed with Discover Financial, i have learned how to read the fine print and stay away from unneeded fees. There is no annual fee and the only compliant i have had is that they have done away with the 0% interest on the first $250 spent. (they say its in regards to the new federal regulations, which is bogus). But all in all, if the student is responsible and can manage debt and finances, there should be no problems with this account.

It seems that now they don’t give credit card to anyone. You have to be ‘invited’ to apply.

Be Careful of this BANK… It appears they want an annual FEE.(recent account change in the small print of the bill…based on son’s recent statement…if you have this bank I would move to another credit card.

The FIRST FINANCIAL Bank is NOW CHARGING FEES>>…hidden in the fine print…of long standing always paid in full accounts…is a right to charge a fee.

The FIRST FINANCIAL Bank is NOW CHARGING FEES>>…hidden in the fine print…of long standing always paid in full accounts…is a right to charge a fee

I’ve had this card since I was 18 and actually got it because of $250 limit. The annual fee will be waved if you call them when you see it post. They have waived it for me every time. I’ve never paid it. I always keep the card paid off and have an over $8,000 limit…not that I’ll ever use it. The interest is ridiculous and continues to rise but you have the option to opt out of some of the changes by calling them. Do I recommend them? No. You can’t pay online or over the phone unless you want to pay an extra ten bucks and you can’t track your purchases online. They are also rather edgy if you try to cancel it. Be wary if this was your first card and you go to cancel it after a while as it may actually harm your credit score to cancel your oldest card. (so they tell me…I really don’t know and would love to know if anyone else has a clue.)

DO NOT GET THIS CARD

I made the mistake of doing it, basically if you try to make a payment online they’ll charge $10 for it, and you can’t make the $10 payment WITH the online payment so you’ll always be $10 in debt to them if you don’t make a check payment. I’m actually waiting to find a way to sue them for it cause otherwise I’d be paid off. These guys are SCAM artists

I applied for this card when I was in college and unaware of what a solid credit card company should be like. This card is nothing short of rediculous… The APR that they couldn’t go below was 29.9%! Mind you - I have a credit score of 790. It’s total robbery and young people should be warned.

In addition, they will charge you a $9.00 fee every time you pay online. Think about how may companies charge for paying online… None (not legit ones). I’m never late for payments, but I also have seen that those costs are outrageous to. Though I have had an instance where they waited a week to process my payment and charged me the late fee.

Young people - stay away! There are better credit cards available for you. Look at the fees and rates. This card is no good! Customer service an issue, too.

Stay away from First Financial Bank USA!!! They will bombard you with fees. Unless you mail them checks they charge you to pay your bill. I pay over $300 a month and it only takes about $20 off my balance. First Financial Bank USA has the absolute worst customer service and they have pretty much ruined my life. First Financial Bank USA has the worst interest rates I have ever seen. I was such a good customer for years and they refuse to work with you. Complete vultures. They may seem fine the first year or two. Wait until you’ve been with them for years. You will wish you never signed up for them. Avoid First Financial Bank USA at all costs!!!

As a parent of a recent college graduate, I have two words for this bank/credit card company: LOAN SHARKS. Please stay away and deal with reputable companies.

lakisha harris

No, no, no!

Go to a known bank where you have relationships. I was able to get a debit card for my daughter with her being out of the country, and I have a guy that I can simply call if I need things.

We will encourage her to get a credit card there, or where one of our other longstanding relationships happens to be, when she wants one (still a teen in high school, so not yet). I have the same single credit card I first obtained in the 70’s with a 4% rate (they bumped it a few years ago, but with my 35 year relationship and some sleuthing to find the higher ups, I was able to get it back down, where it remains). I will encourage her to go there.
