Let’s return focus to assisting the OP.
Conn doesn’t have any on-campus classes during the summer, so very few students are there and naturally they wouldn’t be having art shows. You can’t get a feel for the vibe of a school like this during the summer. If you think it might be a good fit for your kid, I’d encourage you to visit during the school year.
S25 is applying there – and he is a mix of artsy and sporty. He is an athlete who goes to an arts-focused high school and is very committed to his creative pursuits. He feels like the place would be a great fit for him.
The only alum of ConnColl I know as an adult is someone who started there in late aughts, and whom I would describe as the opposite of preppy – someone concerned with social justice, coming from an art background, and eventually parlaying their interests into working for progressive policy NGOs. I know that they had a great time there, and felt like they found their people among the student body.
My son started there this fall. Your impression is correct. I have been told it is a very boring and dead place full of weirdos and kids who aren’t very smart. No need to fear any preppies because they wouldn’t dare step foot there. Too weird. Lots of transgender and alternative types who are very into policing everyone else’s speech and trying to get Deans and professors fired if they dare step out of the liberal line. My kid lives every day on campus in fear of saying the wrong thing, not that he would say anything wrong in the mainstream, but wrong in the eyes of the left wing extremists on campus. Some of them sit in the student center and lord over it. They duct taped a piano closed because they were greatly upset when students dared to play it in the public space. Also be aware of the nutty helicopter parents who post in the parent Facebook group, slandering people left and right about their students’ experiences.
^^^^^ This is absolutely not my experience at all.
This seems…ironic?
It is! Hahaha! However, don’t shoot the messenger! Good luck everyone.
You might want to go back and reread my original post. I’m not sure I’m your target audience for this diatribe. From everything I’ve gathered from other parents, and students, Conn College seems like quite a lovely place, filled with many different kinds of students.
I’m sorry your kid is not happy there - maybe they could transfer?
We visited twice: once during the week, when the place was buzzing with students, and once on a Saturday, when we saw very few students walking around. We got a very good impression of the school, especially on the “lively” day.
This doesn’t sound credible.
That’s a polite way to put it.
And what was your impression?
The students who we saw walking around campus seemed energetic, engaged with each other, and happy to be there. Very different from a tour of a different school upstate, where the students walking to and from class looked kind of checked out.
My quirky, introverted, transgender daughter is considering Conn College. I’m also not sold on the vibe. Have your children decided if they will attend? We’re planning to visit this week to explore.
My son is still waiting on 2 more decisions this week and we’ll have a better idea where he is leaning then. From what I gather, Conn College has a real mix of students. I think you should ask a lot of questons and see if you can meet with an LGBTQ student while there. There was a student up-thread who was very helpful - maybe reach out to them and see if they can connect you with someone on campus? Hope you have a good tour!
My artsy (but extroverted) trans son is considering attending as well. We will likely go back for one of the admitted student days.
Connecticut has an upstate?
Trinity?
Or does s/he mean a school in upstate NY?
Conn definitely has a nice mix of students. There are a lot of athletes, but also a lot of arts-focused kids — and some who are both. I felt a warm, open vibe on campus.
Just an anecdote, but the first time I visited with my son, it was on a nice fall Friday, and a small group of artsy-seeming kids were having a sort of carnival on Tempel Green, with a dunking booth and stuff like that. A couple of guys who appeared to be coming from a sports practice walked by, and someone called out to one and they came and joined in.
No, I think she means UConn. “Upstate” being Storrs, CT.
