Every defendant rich or poor is entitled to a fullsome defense. That is the core of our justice system.

So his parents didn’t actually testify? They sent a statement? I would have thought the father would at least acknowledge his part in putting his son where he is today. I would have liked to have heard the lacrosse coaches and head of the athletic department say the same thing.

The best description of the testimony I could find was at
[George Huguely Sentenced to 23 Years - NBC29 WVIR Charlottesville, VA News, Sports and Weather](http://www.nbc29.com/story/19418141/george-huguely-sentencing)

I can’t believe Huguely’s attorneys brought up the civil suit.

So how much time will he actually serve?

According to news accounts, if the appeal is unsuccessful, he’ll serve at least 20 years. Sentences can be reduced to 85% of the original sentence for good behavior, etc. So, if my math’s right, he can get about 3 years off the 23 year sentence.

Virginia is a tough state for criminals/sentences. One thing I like about it. Unlike Washington where guys that should have still been in jail commit more crimes.

Yep, a really tough state. That’s why UVA students who kill firemen only serve 2.5 years

Huguely should have gotten at least life without parole. This wasn’t some accident, this wasn’t some gangbanger shooting another gangbanger over drug turf, this was a violent animal brutally murdering an innocent person.

I mean for crying out loud, a woman got TWENTY YEARS in Florida for shooting a gun in the air! What the hell is wrong with so many states’ laws??

Oh well, I’m sure he’ll have fun in prison. What a way to fall. I grew up near his hometown of Chevy Chase and I’ve been to his high school (Landon) before. Really nice places. Luxury, privilege, really just very nice living. I’ve never been to UVA or Charlottesville but I hear it’s nice as well. Must suck trading all that for a small concrete cell eh Boy Georgie?

Yes, despite what you’ll read in the ‘comments’ section of every article on this, Virginia hasn’t had parole since the mid-90’s. Anyone getting parole was sentenced prior to then. He may possibly get credit for ‘time served’, and as much as 15% of the sentence for ‘good behavior’. He’s served approx 2 years, and IF he gets the max reduction of 15%, he’s at least serving 18yrs.
