Studio Placements

nutterbutter…make sure to read ETW’s site and it tells about the studio and the curriculum. My D is in that studio right now but was originally in CAP and so she only has done this studio for her final three semesters (you have to auditoin to get into it if coming from another studio and it is hard to get into actually). Based on what she has told me, she says those in the studio are in love with it. She said that the other students are just so great to be around…there is no competition at all. The faculty is amazing. There is a set curriculum the first two years (she was not in that but she had to first do one semester called Transfer Track in ETW). Then, for the last two years OR if you come from another studio, the advanced studio allows you to PICK you classes in the studio which, for example, was not the case in CAP21 which has a very set lock step curriculum that each student must take…no choices. But you pick which dance class you want and which acting class you want and same with voice. ETW is also very physical acting. And there are some classes in self scripting too or even composing music. Look up all the courses they offer on their site. The studio puts on plays and musicals (this past fall they put on Oliver, though she said it was a very different twist on that musical). The person who wrote Viewpoints is on the faculty. The studio is right in the Tisch building…so convenient! They also put on new works. Last semester, my D auditioned for and got into a Workshop production with Moises Kaufman and his Tectonic Theater Project…10-12 kids were cast and it was an amazing experience. They wrote the show (she acted and sang in it) and I saw it. The chance to work with him was a wonderul opportunity. He was working on this while getting his Broadway Show ready to open at the same time. Another option in ETW is in senior year, you can choose to do an Indpendent Project but you do not have to. This was very attractive to my daughter. Even before she was ever in ETW…she had been the musical director of another ETW student’s song cycle project and was the musical composer to another person’s musical project there. But now, she has written her own original musical that will be put on next month. These are on top of the faculty directed plays and musicals which are not original works.

This studio has a lot of collaboration. A variety of methods are taught, not just one. They have many distinguised faculty as well as bring in many well known artists to work with students.

Their summer program in Amsterdam, which my own kid did not do but many of her friends have done, is supposed to be an amazing life changing experience. You don’t have to be an ETW student to do the ETW Amsterdam summer by the way. The students themselves in ETW are just really neat people and many are creative artists who enjoy going beyond just the material that already exists in theater. The possibilities in ETW are endless.
