Yeah I’m sorry. I meant semi-finalist, as in students who scored high enough to be candidates for finalists. The finalist thing is really just a formality. You write a short essay. The people who are awarded the grant are a much smaller percentage.
Just look at the numbers. Stuyvesant has something like 170 National Merit Semifinalist a year . You can find other metrics. These kids are amazing. There is no financial barrier to entry and they are brilliant and do amazing things. I remember my daughter came home one day early in freshman year and told me her class was averaging a long table of numbers for a science course. She and a classmate were using a calculator, when a student to her right softly cleared his throat and said “I think it is X,” which it was. He had done it in his head. Blew me away. Nicest kids too. All trying to help one another.
No school is right for everyone. And I sometimes think kids who barely make the Stuy cut off maybe would do better elsewhere. But there is no place like Stuy that I have seen in terms of the meritocracy. Money gets you nowhere there and while the humanities faculty is surprisingly good, for STEM is is really unparalleled. There are easier paths, especially if you are a legacy or an athlete fwiw

Depending on how new the user is, that may not be possible. (I don’t recall exactly what the guidelines are.) As an established user, you may need to initiate.
Thank you for the tip! I’m pretty clueless.
Yeah in that case you’re definitely right. Many kids in my grade have transferred out to easier prep schools in NYC by junior year.
HI Can anyone comment on how much homework high schoolers receive at both schools? Appreciate any insight. Academic Rigor is important but we also want a happy child who can also have a bit of a social life.
i dont attend either but since i go to a k-8 i know a lot of people at both. most horace mann students will say 45mins to an hour of homework per night (so around 3 hours per night). others will say above 5 hours. then again, it depends based on the class. as for riverdale, a lot of the ppl i know there say its around 1-2 hours total. both schools are extremely rigorous, but imo and experience, horace mann has a lot more homework/testing.
Hi, on average how much homework do you have a night? Any opinions on Bronx Science? (We got in to Bronx Science not Stuy
Absolutely, Stuy does very well for college and sends tons of kids to U Chicago etc. The only thing I would say is they deserve to do even better, but slots from NYC do go to legacy kids and what Larry Summers refers to as rich sports candidates (crew, squash, lacrosse etc) but there have been plenty of articles about how many Stuy kids there are at top schools.
It depends on the day and who your teacher is. I know people who have almost none and people who have an hour of work for the same course. I also know a lot of kids at Bronx Science and their college matriculation is strong
