Success Stories: Bad HS Record w/ Great College Record

True, true.

Like others have said, this is inspirational and relieving. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be adding my story here. The dumb*ss I am failed out of college after three semesters and right now I’m attending my local JUCO trying to salvage any dignity and hope I have left for a decent future. I doubt any four year university will want me.

2.0 Cumulative GPA in HS
1050 SAT

I’ve been at college for one year with a total turn around and next year will hopefully be attending Tulane or Umass Amherst.

There’s no secret formula. Your main priority should be to demonstrate to universities that you can earn consistent A’s in challenging classes.

HS record: 3.2 GPA, 27 ACT, good EC’s, dropped out senior year.
Finished diploma through home school prgram. Did nothing for 2 years.

Graduated from the ā€œdreaded community collegeā€ with the honors program- 3.82 GPA, going to selective, private lib. arts university on full academic scholarship.

I dropped out of HS and got a GED. Let’s say that my grades were not good at all on average… a big change from my elementary school years. HS and I didn’t get along well.

Many years later I decided that it was ridiculous that I didn’t have a degree and made it my goal to obtain one at a decent school. I went to CC for a couple years part-time and got a 4.0 back in 2001-2. Then, in Oct 2006 I decided to really do it full time. I quit my full-time job in December of that year and enrolled at CCSF full-time for Spring 2007. I learned of Columbia GS that October as well and applied… was accepted but after getting the fin-aid package decided it was too expensive to attend (I live in Cali so have some great public alternatives).

I applied to 7 UC’s and NYU for Fall 08 and have been accepted to UCSD and UCSC so far and waiting on the rest… hoping for Cal:)

Good luck to you all!

deleted…

Dumb question ahead: What is Columbia GS? Is it just Columbia General Studies, because that’s what Google’s telling me. Isn’t that crazy, crazy, CRAZY selective? Is it even possible to pull that off with a > 2.0 HS, but a 4.0 college with a great deal of A+s and a semi-challenging schedule? I’m just trying to know what I should be aiming at here. Thanks lots.

Talk about a success story…

Had a H.S. 2.3 GPA. Went to community college for two years, ended up with a 3.33 GPA. So I decided to try my luck with North Carolina, Michigan, Florida, and Minnesota. I’ve liked Minnesota and Michigan since I’ve been about six years old, and really wanted to work somewhere in the Sports Industry.

A month ago, I got into Minnesota’s Sport Management Program. Last Thursday, I was one of the several people who was wait listed at North Carolina. Last night, I really thought that I was destined for Minnesota. Sure enough, I wake up today, log-on to my Wolverine Access and Michigan has made their decision. I got into Kinesiology. I screamed for about five minutes and called everyone I knew about this. It was one of the happiest moments of my life.

Tomorrow I find out from Florida, but in all seriousness, I don’t care if I get rejected. I got into the two schools that I grew up loving as a little kid. People will tell me I’m crazy if I go to Minnesota over Michigan, but the thing is - Minnesota directly admitted me into my degree program and is giving me a killer deal. So I ask everyone, what should I do? Go to Minnesota (OOS), a school that may be a better ā€œfitā€ for a guy like me, or try my luck at Michigan? Worst case scenario: I flunk out at Michigan and would end up at either Minnesota or Indiana. I think that I’m going to be a Michigan Wolverine.

Uber-congratulations, draftnik. Compare the programs at Mich and Minn. Compare the costs. It sounds like you would be excited at either. Give us the pros and cons as you see them and we’ll help you decide. 90 of 100 people will tell you to go to UMich, because it is more of a household name. But that is not the best way to choose.

I went to a private high school, I got a 2.6 GPA with a decent amount of EC’s. I somehow got accepted into University at Buffalo (fairly competitive with 25,000 students) with my crappy record. Now I’ve been there 2 years, have a 3.89 GPA, and I am now setting my sights on Cornell in the fall.

I’m at a NY state school, so I have a realistic shot of getting in.

Any chances for a college dropout making it back to a university?

Congratulations, draftnik12!

how hard is it to transfer into berkley as an out of state student (given that I have very good college stats) along w/ my crappy high school stats?

ā€œThere’s no secret formula. Your main priority should be to demonstrate to universities that you can earn consistent A’s in challenging classes.ā€

Caillbotte, judging from the posts that I have already read that seems to be a pretty standard criterion. I am more interested in the way people structured their applications and tailored their esseays to give them admission to a competitive school w/crappy h.s. records. In other words what did they do SPECIFIC to their applications?

Don’t worry about ā€œtailoringā€ your essays. Just write an essay that makes you stand out.

In high school my freshmen year I ended up failing three classes. I just didnt care at all…I even received a 19 for the last quarter of Algebra I because I slept the entire period! I graduated hs with a 2.5 GPA never took an honors course or APs, and never even applied to any colleges.

I went to a CC and slowly began to turn things around…I found the classes to be so much more interesting. I started out with a 3.25 the first semester and since have maintained a 4.0 taking difficult classes(calc, organic chem, etc). Now I have a 3.7 with 58 credits and got accepted into every college I applied to. So now I’m deciding on where I want to go…either Rutgers, University of Maryland CP, or USC.

WOW Mike!!
congratulations! you most definitely deserve it.
I’m in the process of doing what you succeeded in
keep up the good work everyone on this thread!

Congrats for your hard work Mike! I am a senoir in h.s. and didn’t do to well either but I am about to start what you did at Clarkson. btw I would go with USC.

mike- what major did you apply to at usc?
